1. Real Sub37.
2. The Legend.
3. Xhip.
4. Diva.

Diva wins in the anti-aliasing category.
The 2 other softsynths are good enough for the aliasing to be inaudible.

*The scale of the spectrum view is 16.2K to 22K.

why the below of the spectrum is like this on the sub37? and why not the plugins?

Noise.
I didnt bother adding it on the plugins, because my aim was to show the aliasing, not to match the spectrum perfectly.

(1) If the power supply effects are emulated why there are no fixed 50/60Hz (and possibly some 100/120Hz etc.) harmonics there? OK, there are some on my Legend_Square spectrum but there are none on saw/pulse and if I, for example, play C8 on square there are none as well. This is a little strange because on all hardware synthesizers I ever recorded there is some 50/60Hz and similar garbage, depending on the quality of power supply. I don't say this garbage should be emulated because it is useless - I am just curious why there are no 50/60Hz peaks here.
Good question. Those 50/60 Hz peaks are different, a leak-through effect that can be heard as a constant "hum". We did not emulate this because it would be a disturbing artifact, something that is always there, not just when a note is played. Most audio engineers would typically remove such a hum effect if it gets obnoxious, for instance with a noise gate. So it seems pointless to emulate something you would later want to remove anyway.
HrastProgrammer wrote:I(2) How come that there are no such harmonics on the resonance alone? I just made a simple resonance sweep and it is clean as I would expect, no tons of "power supply harmonics" here.
It is there, I just double checked (perhaps try a higher cutoff frequency, the effect is also frequency-dependent).

Note that the audible effect is very subtle in any case, whether it's around a resonant peak or on a dry sawtooth. Aliasing is very different, it is about frequency components that are harmonically not related to any partials, and thus give a metallic or noisy sound (hence why some refer to it as "aliasing noise"). Aliasing is particularly bad when you play a high note and then get new partials in the low- and mid-frequency region. This can never happen with the power supply emulation in The Legend, because it only creates frequency components around the existing partials.

In poly mode the voices seem to get distributed across the pan randomly, right? I like that, it's like with Hybrid 3 and I think some Oberheim emulation.

Post

Yes, if spread knob is greater zero. In default position (5) it's a 6 db spread.

Post

But I think there is something odd about it.
It seems that when playing single notes in poly mode without keeping the keys pressed (for instance with bell sounds), i.e. hearing mostly the release, the note is on the left side most of the time, unlike on Hybrid 3, where notes are randomly distributed across the pan.

Take for instance the FM Dream patch, set it to Poly instead of Unison, turn the FX off and the spread knob to max, and then play very short individual notes. They play almost all on the left side (since I am using headphones it is very obvious). It seems that the arbitrary spread only kicks in when playing notes with overlapping decay/sustain phases.

The minimoog does not have ADSR but ADS envelopes.

So, I'm missing a switch in Legend to link the D and R knobs.... :)

Yes, also noticed this. I would like alternation (new notes going L,R,L,R,L,R,...) more.

Still, I wonder how they did the kick drum for Donna Summer's I fee love on a Minimoog (which Moroder said they did) if its attack was like Legend's. I don't seem to get that consistent punch from Legend.
They could have sampled it...
In the 70's?

There weren't any proper samplers till the 80s.

Except tape, glue and scissors. :)

And consistent drums require oscillator reset on keypress, to always start at the same max phase.

Or simply a compressor (+ P.EV accuracy of course)

As with the latest synapse plugins dune 2 and the legend .
The plugins are idling when not used and the gui is opened , at first I thought this was because of my low spec ...laptop...
I now have an i5 laptop ,with a dedicated graphics ati card and also testing on my brothers i7 +nvidia .
Both plugins show around 30 cpu usage when not being used ..gui opened ...cpu usage is verry moderate when it comes to audio .
Any one else having issues with this ?

30%? Wow. Thats not good. Dont get that here. Its about 1%. My machine is pretty old too.

0% here when idle (in FL Studio). 1-2% in Windows Task Manager when GUI is open. Though, my machine is pretty high end.
