Izotope releases Neutron: "A smarter way to mix"

thanks - that seems really strange to me in my ignorance - how can you usefully set an instrument's parameters without knowing what the context is? There must be underlying assumptions as to what is a good vocal performance for example. Tom Waits is just so different to Renee Fleming. Still, maybe it is that smart and provides a great starting point (which would be enough of a time saver for me). I would like to hear more from Izotope about how neutron deals with different styles of vocal
EDIT and SOLUTION
from the manual and exactly what I wanted to know and exactly the answer I wanted " It is important to note that Track Assistant does not analyze the audio in order to meet some sort of pre-defined outcome (e.g. if the audio has no low end, it’s not going to engage a huge low end boost for the sake of making it
more like pink noise); rather, it places nodes at areas of interest already present
in the signal."
Perfect!

Really interested in this but, man, I just bought MPB and RX audio editor standard in the last 40 days. The MPB was the same list price as this new version. Izotope support has so far been amazing, so I did email them. I am loving the MPB and RX audio editor and am still learning to use them but so far they were worth every penny.

Very interesting with the demo.
I bypassed my own EQ moves and ran this. It made the same resonance cuts I did, pretty much, in all cases. I'm almost 99% subtractive all the time. However it made boosts I never would have, all of them in the top end.
I asked someone with more or less fully functional ears (without telling them what I was doing) which sounded "better" - they chose the Neutron assisted mixes. Iiiiiinteresting...
Haven't tried the masking yet, I notice even on "medium" it adds too much compression, so the little sliders to dip to around 50% make it quite nice.
I'm sold man. Just about. Just in case, I'm giving it a few more days before I fully decide.

The EQ seems to look for problems, so you get the track nice and the you balance it against other tracks using masking.

My first impression is that it would be interesting if the track assistant could optionally take the current preset/settings into account. It does some tidy cleanup work, whereas the presets allow you to characterise the sound. Would be nice to integrate both into the process somehow, instead of being forced to use either/or.
Definitely one of the more interesting releases this year

yeah, that would be nice. Or more options for it, while the 3 modes and 3 presets that exist now are fine it would be nice to have a little more, I don't know if maybe one more level or more options in mode or preset.audiosabre wrote:My first impression is that it would be interesting if the track assistant could optionally take the current preset/settings into account. I just applied the demo on a track I am working on. I put it on each track. I used the mix assistant and made only minor tweeks to the EQ. I thought about if I should post just what Neutron does on it's own, or post me using it the way it's intended: as a starting point or option and tweek from there. I decided on the latter. The original mix was as good as I could get it. I felt there was only perhaps a minor improvement I could make. So I would consider it at least 80% of my capability. the other 20% would require a lot of time. For the Neutron Mix I used the assistant as I mentioned. I also used the Masking feature to clean up some convolution in the low end and in the upper mid-range. I pretty much left all the processors as set by the assistant except a small tweek in the low end and I turned off a dynamic cut on the strange metalic strumming sounds - I wanted those to remain a bit brighter. I get where Neurton was going though, to make it more balanced - which it did.

While iZotope boasts low CPU, I'm finding that 3 instances take up 15% of CPU in Ableton Live Win32 on monster quad processor rig. Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm getting between 16-17% CPU for 3 instances running the "master/add some sparkle" preset on each track - that's on a mac running Live 64bit with a quad-core 3.2ghz i5 processor. That seems pretty light to me for 3 x 3 band compressor + 3 x eq + 3 x 3 band exciter.

Thanks for the info... That seems a lot to me compared to Alloy.

I'm having some serious problems with Neutron's demo on Studio One 3, Windows 10 x64.
The GUI is extremely laggy. It's actually lagging the whole DAW when I open it. Also, one instance alone is consuming 22% of CPU power.
I've never experienced anything like this with any other plugin. Very buggy.

Maybe there is a demo issue coz with the full versions in MPB2 I get 4 instances of Neutron in Reaper plus 2 instances of Ozone7 on Win10RafaelMorgan wrote:I'm having some serious problems with Neutron's demo on Studio One 3, Windows 10 x64.

It seems to be a compatibility issue specific to Studio One. It's running smoothly in Reaper here as well.woggle wrote:Maybe there is a demo issue coz with the full versions in MPB2 I get 4 instances of Neutron in Reaper plus 2 instances of Ozone7 on Win10RafaelMorgan wrote:I'm having some serious problems with Neutron's demo on Studio One 3, Windows 10 x64.

As far as CPU use I get around 50% with 14 instances, my DAW: Live 9.7b, win10, i7 4790k, RME fireface uc, 512 samples for buffer size, 44.1khz and 16 bit.
the GUI does get laggy, specially in masking mode. Whem using track assistant it increases the CPU use while analyzing.
