It's not a constant enabling of the service - some settings just got reset to default with that 'big' update.
Thanks for the tip.

I wonder, how about Windows Server? Is it usable platform, for a DAW?

Try it... but if (some/many) things don't work you're pretty much on your own. Hardly anyone uses that for a DAW, and you'll get no support from hardware/software developers.

Microsoft should have a little more respect for advanced users.
By all means have a dumbed down edition for the "average" user. But any software with "Pro" in the name should offer "Pro" features.
I'm with you on that! Also... there should be world peace, no pollution, no disease, no overpopulation, an average IQ that's a lot higher, Star Trek transporters and replicators, etc... :hyper:

Now, unless you HACK it, it's going to "HAL" you to death. And let's be honest, they'll figure out some borg assimilation for the "hack" :)
I have not disabled Cortana, and she doesn't bother me. I don't even notice she is there for the most part. I mean, it says "ask me anything" in the bottom bar, but I generally hit the Windows key and start searching. I'm not forced to use Cortana for anything, and nothing I do is interrupted by it.

So honestly, I think it's a bunch of whining about nothing when people complain about Cortana. Maybe she only leave me alone and nobody else, but I know that people love to find reasons to complain about Microsoft, even if the reasons are ridiculous. I just personally don't see how Cortana gets in the way.

YMMV.

Thanks. I will try out the WASAPI mode driver (perhaps Microsoft is secretly sabotaging the performance of ASIO in Windows 10 to improve adoption of WASAPI anyway). I am happy to see that WASAPI is supported by Voice Meeter just like ASIO.
I tried to use WASAPI; I am not sure if I have properly enabled it on my PC: none of the audio software applications installed on my PC that I have tried so far have been able to detect WASAPI support:
[1] In Sonar Platinum, when I switch driver mode to "WASAPI", the audio profiler polls all of the audio devices on my machine but cannot detect one that supports WASAPI.
[2] In FL Studio, when specifying the audio configuration I do not see any options for WASAPI.

Perhaps the 64-bit Realtek HD driver installed on my Windows 10 PC does not properly support WASAPI?

ASIO may just be the only low-latency audio option for my Windows 10 PC. I wonder if ASIO4ALL will ever be updated to provide better support for Windows 10.

What do i have to do to use WASAPI in Cubase or Studio One 2? Always wanted to give it a go, but never found any options to use it in said hosts. Do they simply not support WASAPI?

Post

That is ood - I see the WASAPI option in REAPER, but in Win 10, Cubase AI E 8 I don't even have DirectX or WaveOut options anymore...? Just M-Audio ASIO and 'Generic ASIO..'
I tried using WASAPI for music playback recently since it said 'less resources than dx or waveout..' and it seemed similar. For sure it uses less RAM to play mp3s..

I'm pretty sure it depends on your interface/sound card and host. I have Realtek on a laptop and I still see Windows Audio, Windows Audio (Exclusive Mode), and DirectSound in Tracktion 7.

On a different laptop with integrated sound, I see Windows Audio in Studio One 3, but in Ableton Live 9 it's MME/DirectX. I have also seen WASAPI and Wave RT in other places.

No promises, but you could try completely removing the Realtek drivers and let Windows use the High Definition Audio Device driver.

I remember being able to use WASAPI with Reaper with my PC's sound card. But i never saw such an option on Cubase or Studio One.

I had read this before, but forgotten it.

Thank you for the clarification. I see the same options in Tracktion 7, so I selected "Windows Audio" and then picked the "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" setting for the output. I selected 480 samples (11 ms latency) for the buffer. I think playback sounded as good as ASIO, and I do not believe that Windows was intermittently preempting the audio thread as it has been doing to the ASIO thread.

I checked FL Studio 12 again. There is no Windows Audio mode; just ASIO and Direct Sound. I selected Direct Sound mode with the same settings I picked for Tracktion 7 (Speakers; 480 samples; 11 ms latency). Audio playback sounded horrible as buffer underruns were really out of control.

In StageLight 3, I selected the "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" setting with a buffer size of 448 samples. Audio playback sounded as good as ASIO, and I do not believe that Windows was intermittently preempting the audio thread.

In Sonar Platinum, I'm still unable to get the WASAPI driver mode to work after selecting WASAPI mode and picking the "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" for audio output. I see the following message box when Sonar tries to initialize the audio engine:

To summarize, I have gotten decent results using WASAPI with Tracktion 7 and Stagelight 3. Not so much with Sonar Platinum or FL Studio 12. However, I still have yet to uninstall the Realtek HD driver and use the default Microsoft HD audio driver instead.
