How to edit file-names effectively?

The challenge is following:
I've got about 150 audio files (.rex2) which I will convert to be used with the RMX, this happens with the Sage converter. But the Sage converter limitation is that the file name lenght must have max 32 characters (if I remember correctly).
Many of my 150 file names have more than 32 characters because they include the information about the key, bpm etc.
This means I have to edit the file names - that's no problem to do manually if you have just some files, but 150 files you'd like to do with a edit program.
Note2 is not suitable for this.

Any suggestion how do the job, any suitable free program available for this?

For Windows there's also user-friendly Metamorphose which I still use..

I use Rename Master. It has a ton of very intelligent and powerful options to rename files.

I use Bulk Rename Utility regularly for batch renaming my photo files. Works great.

There are a lot of fine batch rename utilities available though, but I choose BRU because it also has a very powerful command line interface. I wrote a small batch commando with the right settings and put it within another batchfile for converting and resizing (using XnView MP command line) and backing up (with DirSyncPro command line) my images and voilá everything converted, resized, renamed and backed up within seconds everytime I run the file

Using the GUI works great too of course and should be fine for your needs.

That's why I love the Kvr (in spite of all the possible controversy) - in a few minutes I get many expert replies to my problem.

BTW - I used the Rename Master v. 3.9 which did the job.
