dmbaer wrote:Can someone define what is meant by "brand new"? Does that mean never before entered in this contest? I have something written several years ago in conjunction with a magazine article and offered for free download in the magazine (itself a free internet publication). But that software was never posted elsewhere and certainly not entered in this competition. It's not clear whether or not it qualifies on this point (although it certainly does on all other requirements).
it means 'brand new' as in never offered anywhere before, something developed especially for this challenge. So you're app wouldn't qualify.

I could be wrong, but I quite suspect if "something developed especially for this challenge" were a hard requirement, a great many entries in the past would have been disqualified.

As I understand it, this doesn't mean you can't base your entry off something you have already been working on in the past, but that you can't have released previously in either the same of a different form.

In other words, rehashing an old plugin to add a new feature and slapping a new logo on it is a no-no. Taking your 5 sample libraries and merging them into one and calling it a new product is a no-no.

Taking some prototypes you have lying around on your hard disk, and have always meant to do something with... I'm pretty sure that's the point of this challenge. I don't think you are expected to necessarily start from complete scratch. In fact, that's probably not feasible for the simple reason that people will have developed their own libraries of functions and will want to reuse them to make coding quicker, for example. Or reuse their custom modules in SE/SM. Or finally want to do something useful with those field recordings from 5 years ago.

I'm sure we can construe edge cases as an intellectual exercise, but in 99% of the cases, I think it'll be pretty clear on which side of the line something falls. If you could just release anything existing, we'd be swamped by feature reduced versions of existing products or payware rereleased as a freebie as nothing more than a marketing exercise. And I'm pretty sure that's NOT the idea/spirit behind the challenge. For is start, there is no challenge in doing that.

So to answer the question in this thread: if you created something for a magazine that has already been released, then no, it doesn't tick the boxes of the challenge.

For what it's worth, I'd like to see an "automation assistant" plugin along the lines of Cableguys Midishaper, which has various tools for drawing custom and preset (square, sine, sawtooth, etc) curves, AND then allowing that sequence of automation curves to be dragged out to the automation lane of choice in your DAW in the same way that MIDI drumloops can be dragged out of various drum machines, like Microtonic. Saving of waveforms you've drawn as reusable browsable presets is a must. Assignment of CCs would be a bonus, but Midishaper already covers this nicely.
Make it so. :tu:

OK, fair enough. But can I get it listed in the freebie section of the KVR newsletter? This is something rather unique and I don't believe there's anything quite like it out there. I'm just interested in getting more exposure for folks who might find it useful. How does one get something listed in the KVR newsletter?

Would certainly be cool to see some more donations and well, general excitement about this :tu:

why? some of the donations will certainly be to encourage others, but past that point donations will be from well meaning persons often with little insight into collusion and social engineering. it would be more fascinating to see a sheen of general disillusionment about "public events" instead of some.. what do they call it... "transient processor" or something being apparently the most laudable creation under the sun while anything innovative or creative takes a backseat to authoritarian envaluation.

yes i know

Developing takes time, and having a meaningful prize sum could motivate some developers to invest time into developing something with little profit potential.

I'd like to see a plugin that loads mame roms. Play cool retro games in your DAW.

Open a developer account and then submit your app to the news section.
