IS FM synthesis your goto?

I like FM for bass. It does a good 'knock bass' type of sound, really good when layered with traditional bass.
I dont have a soundbank for sale, so i wont spam you with a post that looks like im making a genuine reply.

I like FM combined with a classic VA synth ie.- Discovery

+ 1, i was using it for my FM sounds before I've got the Virus (and still do sometimes).George wrote:I like FM combined with a classic VA synth ie.- Discovery
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

Lots of psytrance producers love the Nord 2/3 (in hardware) and Discovery (in software) indeedrecursive one wrote:+ 1, i was using it for my FM sounds before I've got the Virus (and still do sometimes).George wrote:I like FM combined with a classic VA synth ie.- Discovery

^^ I've recognized some presets from Ronei Leite's FM bank in some bigname psy releases

I love FM... and my goto FM synth is Bazille. Bazille has an unusual toolset among software synths and it has an exceptional sound quality and good workflow. I find all sorts of unique timbres using it.

Yep Bazille is amazing.

What do you mean FM synthesis? Chowning/Yamaha multi-op - maybe FM 8? Great for "solidity", a bitch to program well and decades of DX7 abuse by Chinese soundtrack artists have rendered its sound almost comical to me. But I still use it for ganky basses and percussion.
Analog-style frequency modulation? Oh, I love that. It can get real out-of-control real fast. That sound puts the electronic in electronic music. The implementation and modulation routings in SynthMaster's FM sections are excellent. However, FM synthesis kind of only works on one oscillator voices (for me) because the desirable sonic weirdness gets blurred out by multiple oscillators and their modulations.

Blue (1 and 2) have been one of my favorite synths for years, but even though it's an FM/hybrid that is one of my go-tos, I don't consider FM synthesis per se to be my go-to. Subtractive is still my go-to, and my approach to sound design with Blue is typically to use basic FM or one of the other synthesis/waveforms to get the fundamental sound, then sculpt it in a subtractive manner. I've never really been able to create a complex sound that I envision using pure FM synthesis.

Hey layzer, layzer wrote:unprocessed FM tends to sound quite thin. i tried to get the OXE dev to make a version of OXE that layered 8 voice channels similar to the way the yamaha TX802 can layer voices. with independant panning, detuning, ect... he never showed much

For Linux users the Hexter FM synthesizer can be instantiated multiple times in the ghostess host, yielding a pretty good emulation of the TX802 or TX816. It will also load my original 802 patches correctly, something Dexed can't do yet.

I wrote a little HOWTO for emulating the 802 :

(Linux only, sorry.)
I miss my 802 and my TG77.
Best,

I did the exact same thing with Dexter, to come up with samples of TX816 sounds for a sampling project I am currently working on, based exclusively on FM sounds of the DX series. Up to eight instances of Dexter simultaneouslyStudioDave wrote:Hey layzer, layzer wrote:unprocessed FM tends to sound quite thin. i tried to get the OXE dev to make a version of OXE that layered 8 voice channels similar to the way the yamaha TX802 can layer voices. with independant panning, detuning, ect... he never showed much

I just don't think of it in terms of my goto synthesis technique. I grab whatever instrument I'm in the mood to play with, and just experiment. I try to mix it up a lot, and work with synth that haven't seen a lot of use in a while. The specific synthesis type is irrelevant.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
