I currently use Ableton live which i hate because of the lack of comping options and the incredible amount of resources it uses, but stick to it because of remote scripts. I

love being able to use a single midi controller to control every device without previously having to manually assign each control to a cc message.

Do you know if a different daw exists which is more geared towards studio work but has some kind of midi framework to manage devices and plugins via midi and not have to rely on the mouse for anything other than audio editing?

What i'd love to do is to be able to use my midi controler in a manner similar to softube's console 1. I dont mind having to program a script or something that takes time if in the end is worth it.

But renoise AFAIK is more of a tracker and not suited for audio editing.

Depends what you mean. In my opinion Renoise' strengths (atm) are its sample editing and sequencing capabilities; especially as the tracker interface nicely (imo) merges the two. That said, I think it's sample editor is quite robust. The recently added per-sample modulation capabilities and phrasing features are brilliantly executed. There's a lot to work with for editing. And yah; the host itself can be controlled via MIDI in a quite elegant fashion. I suggest giving it a spin. My two cents; it's my main host so I'm kinda biased.

not sure what you exactly have in mind. to make a daw work as you described it would require to have some sort of templates. none springs to mind that have stock library to cater everything you would imagine.

in terms of pure midi (hardware) i find cubase as a solid product. but it requires some setting up. studio one seems to be a good one if one works with vstis.

what you ask for is something like soft/hardware combo.

nektar controllers come with quite a few preprogrammed setups and it seems to be the closest as it can get to what you are describing. in the past novation made an attempt of doing something similar with automap. never tried it though so cant say anything about it.

however, going lemur route (ipad) you may find all the above irrelevant.

Thank you all very much for your responses. I think i found the solution that i needed. I had totally forgoten about the mackie control protocol (silly me) and as you may know, almost every single daw in the known universe does support it so im programming my custom controller to fake the messages used by the mackie control to be able to use it with any daw. I've heard logic has great mackie control implementation but don't want to spend 200 usd on it so my looking at tracktion 7 or maybe buy an old logic express 9 dvd from ebay. But the point is, i think im closer to my goal of ditching the mouse for mixing.

Also, i've checked out renoise and it seems like a very speedy daw as it is mostly keyboard driven so thanks for that suggestion too.
