DX7 factory bank for FM8

After scouring through hundreds of broken links and shifty-looking sites and files, I still haven't found the original sysex bank. Are they even available or is it worth the effort to import them into FM8? I need some classic tones and patches for synthwave.
From what I understand, the FM8 can reproduce the tones/import sysex of other classic FM synths, so links to those would be welcome too.

I don't think I've seen this page before. It 'might' be of interest. I'm not guaranteeing anything.

You can take a read on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=413885&hilit=dexed
It's about a synthesizer called DeXed, that's an emulation of the DX7. Somewhere in the thread there's a compilation made by Black Whinny which contains basically any bank available on the Net in SYX format, among them all the factory banks.

I had Dexed but got rid of it when I got FM8, never really used. The impression I got (from my own experience and others') is that Dexed is very similar, but ultimately inferior to FM8 in sound/emulation quality and features. Correct me, if I'm wrong.fmr wrote:You can take a read on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=413885&hilit=dexed

Thank you for the heads-up on Whinny's post, I'll look for it.
I came across that before but I'm baffled by it, but will inspect further. Thank you.Aloysius wrote:Manufacturer Name: Yamaha

The previous link I posted doesn't seem to be much use. I can't convert any of those sysex files.
I'm sure BlackWinny has it all covered in his Dexed bundle ^^^.
I'm just playing around (tapping keyboard with mouse) with a large stash of files that do convert to FM8 ...
ftp://ftp.ucsd.edu/midi/patches/DX7/
You could have a look there yourself if you can't find what you want elsewhere.

I think FM8 might have a problem with importing sysex files with certain characters in the file name.Aloysius wrote:The previous link I posted doesn't seem to be much use. I can't convert any of those sysex files.

Dexed is not inferior to FM8, but different. FM8 is an emulation of DX7, but with some welcome additions. But, it's not faithful to the DX7 sounds as Dexed is.Aryaroman wrote:I had Dexed but got rid of it when I got FM8, never really used. I came across this warning by member Opoo on the Dexed comments:
"I think for all the novices it should be helpful to make them aware that the original DX7 had only a velocity range up to 100. Todays MIDI standard is 127. This actually srews up the majority of all classic DX7 presets. Its like playing Piano with a slegde hammer. So please, before trying to explore those old DX7 presets make sure you adjust your masterkeyboard or software so your velocity will not exceed 100."
Interesting, but concerning. I hadn't considered this.

Alright, thanks to Aloysius and FMR. Here is the link to the Dexed site where you will find the Dexed Cart, a collection of Dexed/sysex patches, including the original Yamaha ones: https://asb2m10.github.io/dexed/
Now, will try importing them into FM8 and Dexed (reinstalled).

Under the 'Options' in FM8 you can set 'Velocity' to 'DX7 Keyboard' and 'MIDI Controller Range' from '0... 100'.

Good to know. However, I imported some of the banks and I don't notice a problem.Aloysius wrote:Under the 'Options' in FM8 you can set 'Velocity' to 'DX7 Keyboard' and 'MIDI Controller Range' from '0... 100'.
Some usable presets, but due to their age, they're obviously less stereo than today's FM8 patches. I also notice that there are duplicate patches spread across the ROMs of the same synth for some reason. I'm not
familiar with the SySex and FM-systems.
So far I've imported the 4 volumes of "DX7 ROM". There are also files called DX7 VRC Cartridges, DX7II VRC Cartridges, DX7IIFD and DX7S. Are these just different models?

NI FM7 (FM8's predecessor) shipped with the DX7 factory bank plus some extra ones - I have zipped them here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/564 ... %20FM7.zip
should import into FM8 easily.
(It's pretty naff though - the DX200 selected bank is much better)

About a year ago I had to track down the factory bank to restore a friend's DX7. It sounds like you've already found a source, but if not, I should still have it on my hard drive somewhere.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

(a) I only once noticed a difference related to a DX7 patch and the velocity at which it was played. It was a bass preset that I previously knew was good but when I played it via a MIDI file it seemed distorted. Even though my DAW was not distorting. I couldn't understand it, so started googling for answers. It turned out that because the velocity (MIDI values of my MIDI file) was so loud, all the time, the dynamics of my MIDI file were getting lost. When I highlighted the notes in my MIDI file and dropped the volume down a bit, everything played back properly. So ... velocity can and does matter. I hope that makes sense.Aryaroman wrote:(a) Good to know. (b) All I know is that what's out there is an absolute mess. BlackWinny is the only one who has managed to make some sense of it all, as far as I'm aware.
