I beg to differ. They are going to read it and say, "oh look, we weren't on ghettosynth's radar because of some previous bad experiences, but, the quality of our offer got him to reconsider and re-engage. Get the marketing team's bonus ready, this is exactly what we wanted."

Yeah, they made that free plugin offer just because of you.

Well, clearly that's not quite true, they know me much better than that from reading my posts, which I'm sure that they must do. I mean, this could have been a strategy, sort of playing hard to get tor some such, but, no, still seems a bit unlikely. A vintage compressor plugin is going to be a stretch if you want my attention. No, if that were, literally, their strategy, they would have released a snark and sarcasm plugin, that's the kind of thing that's going to turn my head. Hell, I might even pay for that!

I was subscribed to the Cakewalk mail list for many, many years without ever once receiving a newsletter. Some people might think it odd, but I actually wanted to get the newsletters.

About a year and a half ago I even contacted Cakewalk support, who contacted the marketing department, who assured them they had manually set it for me to receive newsletters. Still no newsletters....

...until a few months ago.

Yep. Downloaded and installed fine for me. My anti-virus and Malwarebytes scanned it, and found NO "malware" or anything of that nature.

Installed Cakewalk Command Center. Connected to my account. Checked the installation path. Installed CA-2A. So easy. No drama. Thanks Cakewalk.

-received activation of account with 2 option available
-chose the one with paste here a code
-lauched command center click install
-says its activated
-closed Command center
-opennned logic
-New AU was verified by the plug manager

It's a campaign to get new customers/leads/engagement. It might not be you, but it might. Maybe they are ramping up their plugin development and they want to be ready to direct mail potential customers. Maybe the know that enough people answer their few questions honestly to make better decisions on where to expend development effort. They get information, not all of it good, names, not all of them good, and email addresses that must, at least, be valid in the short term.

Most likely, if they're not on your radar, you weren't going to buy their plugin anyway, they know this, so they'll give it to you in a gamble to see if they can get you on their radar. They don't care about the percentage of people who will take the freebie and run, that's always going to happen. They're gambling that this is going to bring a better return than running more ads, or sending out direct mail, or whatever other alternate strategies that they would normally consider.

How did you hear about it, well, you heard about it here where other people were doing Cakewalk's marketing for them. Reaching out to their communities and engaging potential new customers. The better the perceived value of the deal, the more traction it's going to get in social media. I heard about this on facebook and it wasn't posted by Cakewalk. That's exactly what they want. They're betting that this plugin giveaway is at the sweet spot of the gamble in terms of getting new customers. A discount wouldn't attract near as many new faces, I'm sure that it's non-linear, and giving away something more expensive may leave money on the table and also fail to bring new customers in. Would you really switch to Sonar if you could get it for free? A plugin, especially something like a compressor as almost universal appeal. This is great bait, as evidenced by this thread, whether it pays off for them remains to be seen and it's unlikely that we'll know anyway, unless, of course, they go out of business.

It's just marketing.

Which happens with almost every free plugin releasee.. I wonder if many folks around here actually make music or spend all day playing with plugins and searching through their registry lol

Like that's not fun or something I tend to spend a lot of time playing with different plugins, well really mostly synthesizers and sequencers of various forms, sometimes effects, but not things like compressors. When I do this I try to save a lot of my twiddling as presets, or, in the case of Reaktor, instruments and presets.

For me this is an important part of making music and when I feel like creating something I go to one of my preset sessions and start from there.

I know what you're getting at, but, you're kind of making an aggregate error. It's not always the same people even though there will always be people with similar opinions.

Your observation, BTW, is why I don't download every single free plugin. You could spend the rest of your life doing that. Time matters, time to install matters, time to evaluate and integrate into your workflow matters.

That said, I've spent an inordinate amount of time this weekend fiddling about with Cassetto.

I've been reading last few pages and there was some talking about ransomware and a miss conception about it. I can tell you for sure it was a false positive and let me tell you why.
What is ransomware? It's a type of malware that encrypts your data and then asks you to pay a certain amount of money to get the decryption key so you can get your data back. BitDefender clearly created a type of A.I. that will monitor if a file is trying to modify another system file or something like that. But from the looks of it, has flaws. I have the plugin installed for 2 days and my pc ran for more than 24h so it had enough time to encrypt my data if it was the case. Clearly Cakewalk wouldn't do something like this or else they would go bankrupt tomorrow with such malware.

Ransomware is not a virus so it can't be clearly detected so that's why are created these algorithms that can monitor what is happening on a your PC and give you the end decision on what to do. They are prone to mistakes, even the best ones, because they are scanning a behavior not the code itself. It's like accusing someone of stealing because in a market place he looks at the camera while grabbing some fruits and put them in the basket.

I don't judge that guy for deciding not to install it, after all better be safe than sorry, but I don't think it's the case here. If it truly was malware we all would've know by now since many of us installed it and used it for quite some time.

My comment is half in fun.. I do it too It took me about 4 minutes to make an account, download the installer, install and get it activated. Probably less time than some people have spent making a grumbling post..

What puzzled me was, why do they give you a serial number and a registration code? I made an account and the plugin was already included. I downloaded and installed, then did the offline registration thing. I never entered a serial or reg code during the installation but CA-2A is up and running.

I downloaded the installer and it placed VST2 dlls in the wrong folders, but VST3 went into the correct folder. Did a search for the VST2s and deleted them as VST3 is fine for me. Took about 5 minutes, including offline authorisation.

Anyway, it's working fine here and as others have pointed out, it's particularly good on vox tracks.

Marketing or not, I'd just like to say thanks to Cakewalk for this generous freebie.

Yeah ... It installs into a Cakewalk folder in Program Files. There's no option to install anywhere else. Easy enough to move it, but I would have preferred a choice of destination.
