Hello fellow kvrs:

I have recently decided to quit using ableton live and am in the quest for a new daw.

I dont have an awful lot of money so was thinking on getting tracktion t7 or logic express 9 from ebay.

I know reaper exists, i tried using it once, but seemed far to unnecesary complex for my taste, plus i dont think it has decent timestretching so that's off the case for me.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on which option would be better.

Your responses are highly appreciated.

I like Tracktion but it does not handle video very well (not at all for me) and that stops me using it over Reaper (which I am looking to replace)

I dont really need video, i only need decent audio editing, good audio comping, fast workflow, good cpu management and thats it i guess.

i can't speak for Logic as i haven't used a mac in years.
tracktion i can vouch for.. the one thing it does really well is accomodate all the functions in one window. it's got a great file management part also and it seems relatively stable for me ( i am only on windows 7 ).
however i do recommend Reaper, for the money it's the most 'bang for buck'. i know what the op means about it being overly complex, but it's totally customizable and fairly easy to tailor to your own way of working. A few hours tinkering at the most and for 60 bucks it's a steal. it also has a good community of users and almost weekly updates whereas tracktion is a little lacking in that department.

good - I think Tracktion is definitely worth a strong look then for what you want

But what about logic express 9.
Would you say is unusable in 2016?
I mean trackion is cool but wouldn't logic (even being express 9) would be still over tracktion or reaper for that matter?

as i said... i can't speak to Logic, but Tracktion is full blown DAW whereas Logic Xpress is... a cut down version for beginners and like all 'introductory packages' they will be ideal for a novice ( isn't xpress just like Garageband?) but not for someone with more advanced knowledge and more sophisticated needs. Reaper and Tracktion are the only fulll DAWS you can by for relatively little. You may also want to take a look at Zynewave Podium, energyXT or maybe a 'tracker' like Renoise... read the reviews on Amazon or eBay is probably the best advice you will get..

Logic Express 9 is actually the same as Logic Pro 9 - without the following features:
- DAE/TDM support
- DAP (distributed audio processing with Logic Node)
- Surround
- EVP88
- EVB3
- EVD6
- Sculpture
- Space Designer
- Delay Designer
- Linear Phase EQ
- Match EQ
- Multipressor (there is only the 'Preset Multipressor' as in LE7/8)

Guess it delivers, but have in mind that newer OS X versions aren't made for it, best one is actually 10.6.8, it for sure works on most of them tho, other than that, it's really great bargain at this point for anyone who can appreciate it for what it is, amazing DAW.

Well not exactly that one but one of the many that pop up there.

Seems like you understand my position.

I wish i could afford logic x, but i dont make a lot of money and cant spend 200 on it atm.

Also i still use mavericks which is supposed to be compatible.

Would you have any other advice against it? Something i might be overlooking?

Have nothing really, it works good on Mavericks and it's really awesome DAW and for this price hard to beat for what it offers, even in Express version, which just lacks few things I personally don't even use and never even used in a track, maybe Space Designer, but there's nice reverbs to be found even for free (Voxengo Oldskool one).

Thank you. I'm pretty much covered in the effects dept. I have all the valhalla ones, and some others. XD

I've made my mind and will just buy one of those from ebay.

There's actually one issue tho, distribution of processes with multi core CPU, that was fixed in X, in 9 it seems to overload only one core per channel, workaround is to use aux send channel, there's some minor bugs still, but nothing huge that stopped everyone for using it last few years, some of the worlds top charting records were made in Logic 9 by the likes of SHM, Hardwell and etc.

Yeah i remember reading about this.
Would that single issue justify spending the 200 for x in your opinion?

There's more stuff added&fixed for sure, overall for 200 bucks it's still kind of bargain, but over Express for 40 bucks and your needs, not so much really, I mean you can always save up for X on long run, your projects from 9 will load too, as I said, nothing stopped everyone from making music all this time, I didn't even knew about the issue before I read about it online, never actually had so many plugins&resources on one channel, YMMV tho.

If you can swing X, do it for sure, if you can't right now, 9 will serve you well until you can, some Logic users just recently landed on X (again SHM trio, Hardwell and etc), for app that is abandoned in 2012, it delivers.

Tracktion t7 vs logic express 9
