If your DAW isn't playing midi at 440 Hz and your pitch wheel doesn't return at 0 how do you reset it or change the midi in order to compensate?

I don't know how the DAW could possibly be responsible for not playing the A at 440 Hz. It just passes on midi commands to the instruments, and each instruments can (in theory) be tuned independently. Is this because all your tracks contain a pitchbend message that not properly resets to zero position?

You can use MidiOx ( + MidiYoke? ) to filter out all pitchbend messages. Better though is buy another midi keyboard with a correctly working pitch wheel, because there's your defect.

The DAW doesn't actually play the MIDI, an instrument does. I know that for some really strange reason, my Kontakt player keeps resetting A to 432 rather than 440. So somewhere in the instrument you are using is a setting for A that needs to be changed.

As others have said, MIDI is not responsible for the pitch of any note. All that a MIDI 'Note On' message says is something like "play note 73 at velocity 110". What note 73 turns out to be is entirely in the hands of the instrument or plug-in.

It may be that some note - perhaps an A - can be set on an instrument or plug-in via a MIDI SysEx message, but you would have to check the documentation of your instrument or plug-in to find that out, and, if it could be changed via a MIDI SysEx message, it could also be set via the settings of your instrument or plug-in.

I figured out the problem. It's the interface. It was sending the wrong midi pitch messages.
So just in case anyone else stumbles over the post and has the same problem (that has no solution on the web) then chances are it's your interface.
I have (had) a firewire and when I started adding usb midi to my computer I noticed it then.

How to tune, filter or reset midi?
