Cool, lots of good stuff to check out over the coming months :D

A number of people have made good points about not necessarily discounting later Gensis just because of the Phil Collins connection. Growing up, I've always associated Phil Collins with disposable pop pap and his solo career has never done anything for me musically. I probably quite hastily tarred post-PG Genesis with the same brush.

Anyway, thanks very much for all the suggestions, folks! I think I'm going to enjoy this :D

Almost certainly the most embarrassingly bad band ever to get a recording contract. Even Boney M never quite plumbed the same depths.

It can't be a cliche if I thought it up myself :P

I don't care if others think that or not - the fact is when I first heard Marillion I thought they were a Genesis tribute band and I've heard nothing from their early work to change my mind. Their early albums were shameless copies of the Trespass sound - vocals and music.

Anyway - back to Genesis.

well i like marillion(the fish years)and i dont care what all you obviously older than me people think.i was in my early teens when marillion where startin out so guess who i heard first.was being into them that got me into genesis.and the lyrics altho full of cliche at that age where a lot easier to have a fuckin clue what was going on(sometimes)

carry on

but why because we like one thing must we hate another?

has nothing to do with hate... :)

but it is simply not true - I know about every Genesis song from the inside out and also every Marillion song and the only idea which Marillion has ever copied/nicked/stolen from Genesis
is the final section from Grendel which is basically
Apocalypse in 9/8 - the rest is quite obviously totally different though clearly very much inspired by Genesis.

But who again had this Kate Bush/Tori Amos problem?

Well Nursery Crime and Foxtrot not only visually (album covers) but sonically are quite wedded to one another, and my favourite Genesis albums (first Albums with Steve Hackett). These two Albums were quite at ease having pretty acoustic pieces along side more bombastic pieces. While Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was the last Peter Gabriel Album, I think the last Gabriel era Album was Wind and Wuthering, in my never to be humbled opinion Genesis was still trying to do Gabriel until And Then There Were Three, and didn't quite kick the habit until Mama.

Nursery Crime and Foxtrot are the quintessential Gabriel Albums.

For those into progressive music, both old and new / cutting edge, you should check out the roster of artists at ProgRock Records (www.progrockrecords.com).

In particular there is an excellent band called Little Atlas. They are not a genesis cover band nor do they sound like them, they have their own progressive thing, but they do a cover of genesis Firth of Fifth that is spot on...

Yes it is the same issue - I dislike plagiarism. However at least I've come to realise Tori Amos has written some good songs. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Marillion.

I like them, too.

Hey,

thanks AndreasE for that link, didn't know that.

Yes Jens, a fav-list is fine. I must admit I would put nearly all early songs into it , since Steve Hackett was in (but I like some solo-works from the former guitarist Anthony Phillips too, that man rather privately has made several fine LPs, some called "private parts and pieces", not as experimental as Gabriel surely but some very nice composed pieces in autumnal mood 8), he must have studied classical music I'm sure).
Now I listen to "lamb lies down on broadway" most, and if I have time I listen to all of the songs, maybe with the exception of lamb lies down itself, as I heard that a bit much on the radio in the early 14th century. And I like pretty much what aMUSED has written about that record (whereas I agree with vurt and Jens that liking Genesis is not to say you must dislike Marillion. Saw them live with older singer Fish in those last years and there surely was no big similarity with Genesis, even if "Grendel" was Supper's ready 2. Hey if we would begin THAT way some trance- and techno-orientated people would have big big difficulties not being compared with manymanymany, is it? I like both Genesis and Marillion, understanding that "lamb lies down" appeals more to those who like experimental stuff, why not. Maybe Genesis were more classical-music-influenced, with their flutes, longer pieces, structure and so on.
Err, a song I especially like, Jens, besides "after the ordeal" you already mentioned and many of them, is probably the "softest" one from the lamb lies down  and is called "hairless heart", mainly from Hackett, whereas the album was, as all said, mostly Gabriel's work. Just opposed to "Selling England" by the way,

ALL SONGS DONE BY ALL,

that's what I like by the way  .
So "hairless heart" reduces me to tears even after thousand listenings, Hackett plays it still today, and I pretty well understand others may find me completely mad and schmaltzy for that. But as it sits beside all those "the grand parade of lifeless packaging" and "counting out time" and early noises and nightmares, this firework of so many different ideas it is well done, I think. Simply masterpieces, all of the first albums. The "live" from 1973 I'd recommend also to the one who started this fine thread (thanks again, fine to read all those different opinions, I am a bit astonished that so few find Genesis arrrrrghhh!!! Like some friends of mine who like other good music :D ). Not in the best 24bit/96000KHz though :-)))the live record, but with fine music.

- That was "the musical box" (Peter Gabriel announces on the live album)
- Bommmm!!! (a bass note played while Gabriel talked)
- ....and that was an unaccompanied bass pedal solo by Michael Rutherford (Gabriel).

I liked the clothes Peter Gabriel had on stage as you see on the "Live" cover from 1973 or so. So I'll look over at AndreasE-s link now.

yes, I would have come to 'hairless heart' at the second part of my list :D :hail:

This one is one of the most incredibly beautyful compositions of all times to me

I still have my "Lamb" album... In perfect condition no less! Actually played it recently... incredible, to think it was 30 years ago!
