Selling England by the pound
The Lamb lies down
Foxtrot
Nursery Crime
Once Gabriel left, the band was over as far as I am concerned. Gabriel's talent for theatrics and story telling was never equalled. I also loved their album covers of that period. I was about 15 when Selling came out and there was an aura of magic and mystery surrounding Genesis. I was into Yes just as much then and Yes became my all time favorite prog band. Still sound great today!

For me the best ones are the ones from the Gabriel era and (with some restrictions) the next 2 following albums.
If anyone is interested in hearing it, these are some clips of me doing my best Tony Banks with a one-off tribute concert in '94 at Progfest that I did with some other fellow Genesis fans. It was 20 years since the Lamb and we always wanted to go on stage and pretend to be Genesis for a second. The drummer actually ended up playing with Genesis on their last album (lucky bastard). He's great though. He also plays with Spock's Beard and TFF (Nick D'Virgilio).
I only have a few cuts uploaded. One is actually a medley edit that I made intending to send to PG but I never did. So this one cuts from one song to another which may either be interesting or annoying. The other is a full song but perhaps the least commercial Genesis song ever made (actually, I think Return of the Giant Hogweed was
Anyway, I am taking a little break from work for a second here:

Hey, I never mentioned this before but of potential interest the C3 that I was playing on this gig was borrowed from Keith Emerson by Kevin (the singer who was friends with him). Tony really used a L102 (or a T hammond) but the C3 just sounded righteous. All of the other gear I had was pure TB though like the RMI (yes, a real one, not a sample- heavy beast for a one-two sound thing), Arp ProSoloist, Mellotron (actually a Novatron but same thing) and I couldn't resist playing a CP70 even though the Lamb show in 75 didn't tour with one. In 78 on it was a key part of TB's sound with the Boss CE1 pedal and... well, I just had to.
Enjoy! Nice to see some Genesis fans around here.

If you just can't get enough of that early Genesis sound and you're not put off by a perfect clone then check out Neuschwanstein's "Battlement" album. Close your eyes and swear you're not listening to a lost classic Genesis album.

Btw., did you see my other post about the coming ´Lamb´ tour in autumn/spring 2005 by the ´Musical Box´? Maybe interesting for you to go to a concert. I´ll go for sure.

I knew one of the band members personally and saw them in concert 2 times. It was amusing that he didn´t want to be compared to Genesis. They really made good prog rock music (à la Genesis).

I'm just someone who spends way too much time tracking down and listening to obscure prog rock bands.AndreasE wrote:Who are you?kuniklo wrote:If you just can't get enough of that early Genesis sound and you're not put off by a perfect clone then check out Neuschwanstein's "Battlement" album. I've always wondered what happened to all those 2nd-tier prog rock bands. I picture them working in guitar shops or perhaps selling insurance.
It would have been a fun time to be in music back then.

Almost six pages in and mine's the only minority report.
If we let the proggers get away with this they'll only start a Yes thread and then I'll have to take the gloves off.

Fantastic stuff.
There's nothing like the Arp Pro Soloist. Great sounding "solo" on the "In the Cage".
Also the bassist seem to have a real Rickenbacker on the "Grand Parade". Great sounding stuff.
You must have had lots of fun there.

Oh, I am already going. This is going to be cool. I wish I saw the Selling England and Foxtrot show but this will be great. I can't wait. I've never seen them live but I hear they really go all out with the presentation and everything. Our thing was just a one-off gig as musicians who just wanted to do it for a day. These guys are obsessed with recreating the whole thing. It's borderline scary (probably weird for Genesis or Gabriel to see someone imitating him like that) but for fans it is just cool to see an emulation of something they might not otherwise had ever seen. Actually, when we played the Lamb at this Progfest show I was amazed at some of the things people said to us after the show who loved the album. It was actually sort of a last minute booking surprise for them because most of the other acts in that festival playhed only originals (although one band did play Starless from King Crimson).AndreasE wrote:Respect, SquidsSquids wrote:I only have a few cuts uploaded. Funny thing was that there was a security guard who came up to me after the show and asked me where he could get our album from! He thought it was our stuff and upon first listen he wanted to go pick it up. I had to break the news to him that not only was it not our album but it wasn't new either. It's been available since 1975.

At the time (and still to a lesser extent) I was a gear slut. I collected tons of vintage instruments (mostly keys but also stomp boxes, guitars and ethnic instruments). So, I had picked up a Ricky 4001 to sample and luckily had it for Stan to play. I also collected some fx that Hackett used (I love his guitar sound) such as the Fender Blender and the ColourSound ToneBender. I never found a Shaftsbury DuoFuzz which he apprently used. He also used a Synthi Hi Fly which I never had but played around with once.Tarkus wrote:

So I supplied some Taurus 1s, stomp boxes and a few guitars to the other guys so they had the authentic sound for this (hey, if you're gonna do it, then do it right). I tried REALLY hard to find a double neck electric 12 and 4001 bass but couldn't so he used them individually (and put the electric 12 on a stand you can walk up to and play).
If it was up to me I would have gone further on instrument authenticity. I have those big floppy Rotos and Phil used to use one in his kit. Nick didn't use one though and he had a Gretsch that, along with this Phil Pheel, sounded close enough anyway.
I have to say that I saw a clip of the Musical Box from a long time ago and while the singer looked and acted like Gabriel in a freaky way the keyboard player (there was even two - which is not right imo) was playing something that sounded like a sound canvas in some parts. I am sure they must use the authentic sounds now though if people are raving (and they've been doing this for THAT long!!!). Gotta have the right gear for the Genesis sound. MXR pedals galore, Boss CE-1. I still have a lot of the pedals and a ProSoloist... but samples of ALL of Tony Bank's keyboards from early era RMI or even Pianet Fuzz to the Synclavier sound in Home By the Sea and all of the P5 Duke sounds, Arp 2600 and ProSoloist Lamb and Cinema Show sounds etc. are all in Sonik Synth 2 by the way (had to plug it for the relevance... this IS KVR!). In fact, hidden in the key words of it's database are "Tony Banks" or even certain albums. So you type in "Tony Banks" or "The Lamb" and all of the sounds from that TB or that album pop up conveniently out of the thousands in it.
While it does a lot more than just those sounds but secretly it has to be the definitive Genesis sound module (since there never was one). That's obviously because of my desire to have it all in one place myself. Killer CP70 in there too. Pretty much the entire preset list of the ProSoloist, Arp Quadra, Prophet 10 and even the Many Too Many Polymoog String/Mellotron Violin sound. I made it for the people in this thread who might appreciate it. But they are good sounds even if you don't want to get nostalgic.

Entangled is such as great song. I just got a video of them playing it live. It was released in Japan and someone got it for me as a gift. Anyway, the synth sound in it is an Arp ProSoloist "layered" with the Mellotron Choir. The Arp had vibrato to simulate a sort of vocal like sound on top of the eerie male voices of the tron choir. I did a simulation of this exact combination in the combis of Sonik Synth 2. Because it does combi layers I put together a bunch of the Tony Banks elements so you can play these things as one sound. So, for Duke sounds you get CP70 layered with prophet 10 or 5s and even a guitar so you can play Turn it On Again and sound like the record. The Many Too Many mix thing I mentioned. The Broadway Melody mix of phased RMI and Tron Strings.jens wrote:aMUSEd wrote:all Mellotron I suppose?Big Karma wrote:Don't forget 'A Trick in the Tail'.
I love Entangled on that one. It would be nice to find the synth sounds on that one (nice guitar too).
don't forget 'mad man moon' b.t.w.
Okay, yes, fine I am talking about something you'd have to "buy" to get all of this and of course I benefit from that. But, it's still worth mentioning just for you to know. Plus, I have a light free version coming out (finally) at the end of this month that you can HAVE that has at least some Arp sounds, Prophet 5 Triangle pads (for PC In the Air Tonight sound) and some other "tastes" of what I am talking about in the full version.
But if you are a Tony Banks fan and you were lookiing for a new VSTi that would be fun... this is for you. It was a side hobby finding out what all of these sounds were at one point. Now it has a purpose knowing. (even if it is a very esoteric purpose)

AH! The annual Genesis discussion!
May I add that "We can't Dance" is a pretty good album?! So was the last one but the shouldn't have called themselves Genesis anymore. But it's a great pop album.
Squids:
Nick D'Virgilio is doing pretty good with spock's Beard these days; infact he followed the same path as Phil Collins since Neal Morse left. He's lead singer now and they use 2 drum kits on stage these days. He's going on tour with Tears For Fears again.
And the late Kevin Gilbert........ Toy Matinee and his solostuff (aspecially Shaming of the True) are brilliant. Such a shame that guy passed away.
Oh well, "Water under the Brigde" I guess.

I have that recording..... it rules. Including the "Invisible Touch" intromy best Tony Banks with a one-off tribute concert in '94 at Progfest that I did with some other fellow Genesis fans

I did the Casey Kassum (or however you spell his name) voice on that in Kevin's studio just an hour before the show. It was a last minute idea we thought was funny.RWA wrote:AH! The annual Genesis discussion!![]()

I haven't talked to Nick in a while. He had NDV but I didn't know he took over the spot for Neil. I almost played with them but when it comes to progressive rock I tend to either want to play my own music or play something that is classic for me like any early era Genesis. I should have played a Yes tribute with a friend of mine who sounds EXACTLY like Jon Anderson meets Roger Hodgson. But, although I find tributes to be a fun novelty I am not head on into that whole thing really. The Lamb gig was special and now that Kevin isn't around anymore I am even more glad that we did it.
So, Nick is touring again with TFF? Does that mean they have a new album? Is it out? If not then when? I still like the TFF albums. I buy everyone he puts out. I heard Curt was back in the band too which I find odd (especially if they play songs from Elemental). Know anything?
