:help: Total noob question here.... how do I create samples in VSTis and download them to a stage-ready realspace synth? I don't want my future keyboard player to have to lug a laptop to gigs - actually I won't have it at all due to 'reliability' of Windoze et al. Seriously: not happening.

I'm becoming familiar with VSTi synths, and have some DAW skills. I presume a sample should be a 16 bit .wav, 44,100....? I'm willing to record my sounds at each octave to prevent quality loss, or at each note of the song for simple parts. I just need to get the sounds ready to go straight into a live rig so they can be played, and believe it or not, I have no idea how.

Thx!!

You have a keyboard (for the stage) that plays samples ? If not, then you're kind of done already. If you do, then the manual should tell you how best to import samples or soundfonts that are meant to be playable.

To get a better answer quickly, you might either tell us what model/brand of keyboard you want to do this with, or possibly move this question to the *Samplers/Sampling* forum. :)

^The moving part's done. Can't help with rest, I'm afraid.

There is, of course, a major difference between playing a VSTi synth live versus playing canned samples of it: you can't even begin to control and modulate the samples in any way similar to what you can do with a 'live' synth. But I assume that you know that already.

So, depending on what you want (your keyboardist) to accomplish on stage, sampling synths may be a stillborn idea from the start, unless your music only requires a bunch of pre-planned, occasional effects types of sounds. If you worry about the robustness, or lack of it, of a laptop solution, maybe you'd better get a competent hardware workstation type of synth that can already do what you need.

Food for thought…

If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Thx guys. I just need to get the sounds dialed in and then DLed to the live rig - whatever it might be. My Casio is just a barebones controller. Will .wav 44100 16bit be good enough? Should I make a sample at every octave to prevent tone degredation?

Hardware workstation is my new dream, I guess. Or maybe I should leave that frontier for my eventual keyboardist....?

Without knowing exactly what your live rig is, its not easy to help you. Are you using a sampler onstage?

So far as sampling your vsti goes, I would sample at least 2 notes per octave. I usually grab every C and F# ...

If you're on windows, and using 32-bit plugins, then Xlutop Chainer can load in a chain of VST plugins and automatically resample them to multiple WAV files at whatever key/velocity interval you want. Should work in the demo version.

There have been a couple of other things that were similar but Im afraid cant think of anything else still downloadable.

Alternately, the crudest way is a well-crafted MIDI sequence in your DAW and some time slicing up the resultant recording.

As for downloading them; entirely dependent on the keyboard itself.

Every 6th and Xlutop Chainer sound like good ideas. Thx.

I don't know what synth I will DL my samples to. That's why I want to use a universal format.
