To all - thanks heaps for your input :)
I might pick up a new copy of Cubase SE for 139 Euro, but not until I have checked out some of the other hosts you guys mentioned - I wouldn't mind having to figure out a new workflow and try something new - isn't that essentially what we all do every time we try to create some new music ?
Thanks again.

Cubase SE??! Are you mad man :-o ?

Definitely check out the other options before you drop the $139.

And/or just install a second copy of your SX and move the dongle, as suggested. Now that I'm thinking about it, wouldn't make sense to drop the money on a stripped down version of a program you already own.

Yeah that actually makes the most sense. Thats what I would do.

The main reason why I wouldn't do that is because I'd take the laptop with me when I travel - the idea of the dongle getting damaged or lost makes me shudder to think. I can imagine they're not that keen on replacing it, let alone in a timely manner.

Before parting with any cash i'll certainly check some of the other options mentioned here.

Also, I can get a boxed Cubase VST 5.0 from a clearance sale for 66 Euro ($ 80 or so ?) - I know it's an older product but... any thoughts on that in terms of value for money ?

Thanks.

After working with SX you'll probably find 5.1 unnintuitive and outdated. Especially compared to SX 2.0.

VST 5.1 is getting long in the tooth. People who know it and love it will still feel very comfortable with it and make great music with it; but those who move -backwards- to it will likely feel a bit disappointed. Better the Cubase SE (maybe the version based on SX 1.06 is still out there for cheap, which will at least be better than VST 5.1) than that.

Still, now that you've made your concerns clear about a second install, I go back to my earlier suggestion of Tracktion. (with eXT! :D 2 sequencers, both capable of modular mayhem, one of which can be hosted in the other...!) Neither of them use dongle-based protection, either.
