WOOoow

Man I needed to hear this . . .that was REALLY nice.

You lucky @#?%# . . . .

I remember taking breaks from inbetween my college classes and going out to my van with a friend of mine and listen to American Garage . . this ended up being a daily ritual.

Always been a Danny Gottlieb fan and can't wait to hear what you guys recorded.

Take care and tell Danny I said HI !

It was a lot of fun although BRUTAL! We had to move around about 350 cymbals plus other drums from one studio to another. Here's a pile that we also recorded in a room in my studio as well just to get a different sound.

If you look closely you can see old PMG backstage passes (incl American Garage tour). He was going to take the stickers off and give them to me because he knows I am a fan of that stuff. By the way, he left about 50 cymbals of his with me that he wants to sell. So, if any drummers are interested then PM or email me and I will email you the list. They are all signed by him too but he actually does that so he keeps track of them in sessions. That makes it more valuable I think personally. I got a flat ride Zildjian from him and a baby China.

This was pure insanity! There was a ton of crazy, jazzy, funky etc. loops recorded but also serious vintage and rare cymbals and drums sampled in expanded I-Map format so... guess who is going to be doing the demos Larry! ;) So, you can play with Danny's hits on his rare cymbal collection which includes a bunch of Pat Metheny era Paiste flat rides but also some classic jazz drummer's cymbals. Guys who played with Charlie Parker, Brubeck, Miles and more. Plus all of these one of a kind prototypes he had from Zildjian, Istanbul and... well, just overload of drums. I think we recorded over 70 gigs worth to be honest. DFH can SMD. :D Just kidding of course. I'm just totally into drums that's all. I'd have done this for myself given the opportunity anyway.

sounds like you had a great time, Squids :)

what a job you've got  :D

I post this stuff because hopefully it is of interest. But, that's what SR is like and I just like to show you guys all of these things we cook up for the people that use our products. The "behind the scenes" stuff.

This session was a lot of fun. One of the next ones is with Mark Egan potentially. How cool would that be? (then you can do your best Pat or Lyle over the classic PMG rhythm section! lol). I am getting into sampling some esoteric stuff these days.

can you go to Kling Klang and sample the robots next?

(and can I come? :hihi: )

Hi Squids,

All this is good news indeed. Looking forward to hear more of it.

Depending on my budget, I will buy the stuff '(I will propably anyway  ). Will it be a group buy thing again?

For you it never ends, for me it will all be (re)starting. Quit my day-job, teach at music schools and doing full time music again :D :D :D .

Question: when you sample for different velocity layers, soft and harder strokes, do you record the soft ones at lower level or as "hot" as possible?

Nice ad you have in your posts Hugo. ;)

On recording dynamics... it all depends. Relative levels are important and you have to be careful not to increase your noise floor and also lose your settings. Sometimes you can adjust the levels and sometimes it is best to leave it alone and just get a good hot signal without clipping. If it is clean you can make some minor adjustments in gain later too. There's no one rule on this for me though. I judge by the instrument, the mics, the mic pre, the room and the dynamics of the player. If any of those change then the method can change accordingly.

Only learning :)

Was planning to do my own little drum sampling session. Did some soundfont fiddling before and made one with a jazz bas / G&L bass and double bass that I sampled myself. I still like the electric basses. I had put them on a free webspace. Was rapidly cancelled because of bandwidth usage

So about this drum sampling: have a little feeling I wil not need to do it any more when you release the Gottlieb sessions...haha.

But! Still gonna do it, just for the experience...

Gear:

Behringer mixer with phantom power. No condenser mic's though :( .

Some good dynamic mic's (beyer, shure, at...)

Terratec mt88 soundcard

Athlon 1200 on asus kt133. 512 meg ram. 2 x seagate barracuda ata. Tannoy reveal passive. Old pioneer amp (has to be replaced)

Cuabse SL 1.06

Audacity

Quiet bedroom :D

I've read you use Wavelab. Wavelab is way too expensive for me at this point. Could you suggest an alternative?

Sonic Synth 2 coming soon!

Squids wrote:Now I am REALLY tired. I was going to pop on here and just post that this was one of the most fascinating sample sessions I've ever done. We're doing another day because 12+ hours apparently wasn't enough. There is still a massive floor and hallway filled with drums and cymbals. We did over 50 hi hats today and a ton of jazz rhythms with the kit that were just pure entertainment in the studio for me. Plus I learned a lot of drum info. Some of these drums belonged to jazz legends like Mel Louis, Don Lemon (forgive the spelling) and other great players... don't worry we are documenting it well and I am even capturing some of this on video which I may share with you all... if you are interested.

DG is incredible though. WOW! Hugo, dude, you are going to be happy with this one. I'll send you a few examples when I have them. I got him to do the Phase Dance flam fill. If you know the one I'll send it to you just for fun. Any other PMG fans can have it too. (you have to be able to at least say what PMG stands for to get it ;) and finish this sentence: As Falls Witchita, ___ ____ ____ ___ :D

More tomorrow!

bye
Well PMG would be Pat Metheny Group and As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls

Hi Squids,

Been playing around with sonic synth, accoustic drumkit and the rest. I am generally speaking quite pleased with the results.

I have a suggestion and a request however.

To assemble the "perfect" jazz swing drumkit I have to mix up three different kits. It is a bit of a pain.

The best ride is found in tight dry kit

The best snares in Ludwig the duck

The best Bass drums and toms in Natures kit

This is of course my personal opinion, but I am quite shure most jazz minded people will follow me in these choises.

Would it be possible for you to program such a "perfect jazz kit". I am shure it's not that much work (copy paste :D ), and you would me a big favor with it (by the way this good ride in tight kit can be found in other kits as well and it occured to me that the level is quite low, that's something I have fixed already however).

You may have noticed that in my endless search for good drumsounds I purchased yesterday the Studio drums capsule. Don't know it will resolve my quest for jazz drums however.

I am shure by assembling the above kits you have got a pretty good jazz drums out the present material though.

Hi Squids,

Sorry to bother you all the time, but I have some comments on my own post here.

Rectification:

After some tweaking of the snares in Nature's Kit I come to the conclusion that it would be enough to replace the ride of Nature's kit by the one of Tight dry Kit. By tuning that short snare in natures kit a bit down and cutting of the highs a bit I succeeded to make a nice "ghost note" snare. I like the bass drum and toms in that kit a lot.

There's a lot more to play with on the Studio Drum Capsule than Sonic Synth 1 for drums. Even then, drums are endless. I have been recording more "jazz drums" with Danny (as you may have guessed). So, that will be out later this year.

As for doing your own sample sessions, I think that can be fun. You can at least get specific sounds you want to use in your music. However, technically using a budget mixer with only dynamics might limit the quality results (potentially, but not necessarily). At least a good stereo pair of condensors on the overhead can go a long way.
