Well, i'm Alejandro. I'm 20 years old and i'm from Venezuela. I'm a frustrated musician in other words, i used to play in the orchestra but i quit because i was moving to another city, at 14 i got my first guitar but i left the guitar for laziness. Now, i've always been into music but i'm not currently playing an instrument.
I've FL Studio 12 (not full)
Sylenth1
Massive
Nexus 2
a friend will handle me his Serum later this week.
So my question goes, i'm more into indie music. I love Gorillaz, The XX. I like the prog/psycho, post-punk-revival, indietronic, minimalism, blues. I started in the music because of the Brit Pop and Hard Rock. Into house, Daft Punk, ZHU, Flume and Justice work drives me crazy. That sound i want to create, as well mysterious tracks in a mixture of Interpol and Pink Floyd. RHCP catchy melodies but not getting into rock, staying from indietronic to house, finding a mixture, the balance!
I've been watching Busy Works Beats guides in youtube, now stuck in the Serum part in Sound Design. I've seen already the introduction to FL Studio. So far i know how to make a standard use of Sylenth and Massive.
I've done few beats already, erased all of them but now i've read something and once i start something i'll finish it even if i don't like it. I just want to acquire knowledge of mixing and creating effects to make my thoughts true. The ideas flow. Sometimes i try to make a chill, deep and i finish creating a trap or minimalism intro.
I want to know which techniques do i have to master, which Free VST can i get, i can't keep spending money in these because my country is having a bad time (chet). So, thank to everyone replying and keep rocking all of you guys.
Some of my favorites songs these days are:
Toes - Glass Animals
Sleepless - Flume
Génesis - Soda Stereo (one of the greatest solo i've heard in my life [R.I.P the legend Cerati])
Tap Out - The Strokes
Can't Keep Checking My Phone - UMO
Spanish Sahara - Foals
The New - Interpol
Fame - The Acid
I'd like to know the influences of others in this post as well.
New hehe

with a short time in the field, you'll see the predominant techniques namedropped repeatedly, even if you don't read "how to" material.. music tech is kinda sin fronteras, so you're free to define your own journey thru techniques and technologies. there's plenty of free academic material if you want to explore such things thoroughly, and free resources if you want to spend most time making sound. i'd say pursue whatever seems interesting to you!Jon A wrote: I want to know which techniques do i have to master, which Free VST can i get
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

Hola Alejandro,
Bienvenido al foro, yo soy de México, un gusto saludar a otro latinoamericano en este foro. Si quieres comunicarte conmigo en español no dudes en enviarme un mensaje privado.
The skill you need is: finishing tracks. even if you don't like them that much, just go ahead and finish them. They don't have to be perfect at all just get the idea finished, and mix it. You only will get better making lots of stuff, you learn by doing (as you may know from learning to play instruments).
I suggest separating mixing from composing and arrangement, so you have more focus on each stage.
I will also advise to use a minimal set of tools and keep using them over and over, it is the only way to learn them inside out.
For learning synthesis I highly suggest to check out Syntorial, it is an interactive course, you can download the demo and make a few lessons.
Saludos!
