Yes of course, Keith Green really knew how to play the keys eh? And if you count Larry, then add Whiteheart, Petra, Matthew Ward, Bob Dylan... too long a list.

I don't listen to much gospel music these days to be honest. But in the 70's and 80's it was my staple diet, so the influences do come through now and again.

I remember at one Larry Norman concert (he was kind of an intimidating guy in some veiwpoints) he sat down in front of the mic stand and did some sound checks with his guitar. He said, "Can someone lower this mic?" A guy scurries out and moves the boom down an inch, looking chagrined. Larry waits patiently and when the guy leaves the stage he says, "I meant, could you lower the volume."

By any chance, in that list of classics, did you ever come across a gospel bluegrass band called Brush Arbor?

Thanks Tom Re: Brush Arbor, I vaguely recall the name, but never heard their stuff.

My concert story: I went to listen to Phil Keaggy once, and it was an acoustic set mainly. He kept belching all the way through the set; blamed bad chinese food for it. Big let down.

The old "Blame the Chinese Food" trick, eh? Yeah, I saw him too, maybe 3-4 years ago in a small venue. He was entertaining--he was looping himself as he sang and played and that was pretty cool.

I have not bought a Keaggy album for oh, 15 years maybe, but back then he was 100% gospel, and IMHO one of the finest guitarists to walk the planet (and he is missing a finger on his playing hand!) His album "Master and the Musician" is an all-time classic.
But I can't vouch for what he's making now. As I said I rarely buy gospel music these days.

As for Stryper - gimme a break! They would make me stop listening too

You can't compare Elton John to Keith Green - those songs in particular are in different keys, different tempos and a different time signature. Oh, and Keith didn't have Kikki Dee to duet with
