Early Genesis suggestions?

AH! The annual Genesis discussion!
May I add that "We can't Dance" is a pretty good album?! So was the last one but the shouldn't have called themselves Genesis anymore. But it's a great pop album.

Nick D'Virgilio is doing pretty good with spock's Beard these days; infact he followed the same path as Phil Collins since Neal Morse left. He's lead singer now and they use 2 drum kits on stage these days. He's going on tour with Tears For Fears again.

And the late Kevin Gilbert........ Toy Matinee and his solostuff (aspecially Shaming of the True) are brilliant. Such a shame that guy passed away.
Oh well, "Water under the Brigde" I guess.

I did the Casey Kassum (or however you spell his name) voice on that in Kevin's studio just an hour before the show. It was a last minute idea we thought was funny.

I haven't talked to Nick in a while. He had NDV but I didn't know he took over the spot for Neil. I almost played with them but when it comes to progressive rock I tend to either want to play my own music or play something that is classic for me like any early era Genesis. I should have played a Yes tribute with a friend of mine who sounds EXACTLY like Jon Anderson meets Roger Hodgson. But, although I find tributes to be a fun novelty I am not head on into that whole thing really. The Lamb gig was special and now that Kevin isn't around anymore I am even more glad that we did it.

So, Nick is touring again with TFF? Does that mean they have a new album? Is it out? If not then when? I still like the TFF albums. I buy everyone he puts out. I heard Curt was back in the band too which I find odd (especially if they play songs from Elemental). Know anything?

As far as I know he doesn't play on the album but goes on tour with them (just like in '95). But I'm not shure because he did play on Roland Orzabal's solo album from 2001 (Tomcats screaming Outside). I'll look into it because I'm always excited about a new TTF release.
I'm a big TFF fan too since the early beginning. And it struck me too to find out he teamed up with Curt again (aspecially when you listen too " Fish out Water" from the Elemental album). Probably from a commercial point of few because the hits stopped right after "Seeds of Love". "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" is a brilliant album IMO.

Yes, Nick is the leadsinger now in SB and doing a fine job IMO. Neal left the band because he's become so religious he now completely devoted his life to GOD (which one......? Uhm... The most succesfull one I believe... )
It struck me at first but his "Testimony" album is one of the best prog-albums ever (featuring Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater).
And talking about keys: how about Ryo Akumoto from SB? Is this guy brilliant on Hammond and Mellotron or what?!

I am not really a fan of SB to be honest. I just like Nick's playing that's all. I think he's an incredible drummer.

I didn't know Roland had a solo album. Although maybe I heard it because I seem to remember thinking how odd it was that he'd have one when TFF became HIM anyway. Is it any good? Have you ever heard that Mancrab song? That was kind of cool thing they should have done some more of. I miss Ian Stanley. If you're getting Curt back then you might as well grab Ian too and capitalize on sucker fans like us.

Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are all worthwhile.

I like the Lamb Lies Down the best, and its probably the best place to start.

The best place to stop would of course be anything thereafter (singing by the aforementioned Mr. Collins, etc).

I second that 100%. Maybe the 1st Genesis Live too Avoid anything later!

It's called "everyone loves a happy end" is is released at the end of this month. They have a new record deal in the US these days.
Orzabal's solo album is pretty good although rather different from his regular work; more experimental and "modern". The collaboration between drumloops and Nick's drums is interesting.

Although I like Neal Morse better as a singer Nick is really doing a good job. He's grown a lot as a singer since his NDV-album. And the music has changed since Neal did al the writing in SB and the guys now team up. To me it showes there's a lot of composing talent in that band. Neal is hard to work with if you ask me..... he's a control freak. I love what he does but he should've included other peoples songs too when he was with SB. Anyway.. that's all solved now so it seems!
I can truly recommend the latest SB album; it's very different from the rest.

Cool, RWA. That's good to know. I can see how that could happen. When I played with him and Kevin I used to hear it raw in the rehearsal studio. While I think that Phil and Gabriel's voice blend amazingly. While he was amazing on drums and then even pulling some tricks playing bass AND drums (sort of a Kevin thing) when I saw him play with Jonatha Brooke and singing back up there is no question Nick is just super talented in the band. As a front man though I'd be curious to see what that is like.

So, "everyone likes a happy end"? Uh oh. That scares me. Ev-re-bo-dy-likes-a-happ-e-end (sung like Everybody wants to rule the world). Sounds like they might need some cash. It's probably still good. I love Raoul though. Some tracks on that are just beautiful. Also, Brian Wilson Said on Elemental is just awesome. I am going to try to find that solo record. It's hard to find good new music to listen to these days.

Right, back to Genesis...

Trick of the tail is my favourite, even though its the one after Gabriel left, and I'm a big fan of his. That was the first Genesis album I discovered, and I was totally smitten by the music. Then I got Second's out, with live versions of the older songs on it. So the definitive versions of 'Suppers Ready' and 'Firth of Fifth' etc for me are on that album, with Phil Collins singing them. Sacrilege to some I know. The sound is just so huge and powerful compared to the early Genesis records which were pretty badly produced in some ways I think.

from 'Trick:'

'Entangled' is a beautiful song, the end is mesmerising and as soon as I heard that sonic reality 'entangled' sound I knew it had to be named after that.

'Ripples' is another fave, with Steve Hackett's beautiful reverse guitar, and the interwoven acoustic guitars etc.

There's the beautiful Tony Banks composing and playing in the instrumental section of 'Mad Man Moon', and the strange bombastic quirky stuff in 'Dance on a Volcano'.

I gradually realized I didn't really like them any more starting at Abacab, even though that had some good stuff on it like 'Dodo'.

My fave early song is probably 'Seven Stones', for some reason.

Curious feeling is like a collection of all the good TB bits from mid period Genesis.

Thanks for that. Always heard of "a curious feeling" it would be veery bad, never heard it (only some midi-files ). You see, what a Genesis-thread might be good for! , just for all .

A question: WHERE (not on a "normal release as I own them all up to Duke or so) can I find a song called

"EVIDENCE OF AUTUMN"? Know this only as a midi-file too and liked some bass in it, just curious how it sounds with Mr.Rutherford. Don't have any clue when it was recorded.

Hey nuffing, funnily enough your opinion is the only minority-report here . Not in real life, though, I could easily produce hundreds of (often pretty snobbish) bashings... already mentioned that "Vorstadtdisco"-german-sentences . Believe me, the "oh would they only die soon"-blabla is most often heard, at least here, and I'm glad it's not so this time at KVR .
Ah, YES.... - many very young bassplayers admire Chris Squire from Yes VERY much . Yes, they do , playing totally different music .

I think 'Curious Feeling' is really good. Sort of sombre and emotional, I think its about someone slowly losing his mind...

Now, 'Evidence of Autumn' is a stndout song from the later period Genesis stuff, I have it on a double album called 'Three sides Live'. it had, strangely enough, 3 live sides and one studio side.
I think it was released with different tracks in different parts of the world, but here, it was on that. A lovely song.

...this just reminded me of how one of my old 80's cover bands used to change around the lyrics of the TTF tunes we did:

-- "Shout" became "Trout" ("Trout, trout/Haddock and trout!/These are the fish that we dream about/Tuna/Whitefish and blue/Tuna..."
