While I agree this is an excellent viewpoint to have, I also think the sound design MUST be taken into account as a large factor, since it's one random crappy synth (usually) people have to deal with.TrojakEW wrote:opoint and doctorbob thanks for info and examples.

Yup, sound design is very important given the nature of the challenge - "One Synth"z.prime wrote: While I agree this is an excellent viewpoint to have, I also think the sound design MUST be taken into account as a large factor, since it's one random crappy synth (usually) people have to deal with.
But, that said, I'm not sure about the seeming overemphasis on getting the "best" percussion. Laudable as this is, and some of you are awesome, sometimes time simply does not permit us to go into the deeper details every time (and of course, the challenge that it nearly always is!), and our tracks can get downgraded because of that fact. Sound design is important for all features of the tracks presented, and often it's the interaction of those sounds within the mix which lends the greater character to those sounds - to quote " it's all for the greater good"!! Trump that!
Composition and structure should pay an important part as well. Sometimes difficult if you don't know or appreciate the finer details of genres, and their many sub-genres - I count myself guilty here - even if I have been around music since the 1950's! I just got very confused when R&B incorporated more sounds and rhythms in the 70's onwards. So nice to hear some old Animals tracks again recently on the radio (yeah, that thing with a speaker and dial which makes noise - how I hate earbuds and all things i-something). Still drag out my old 45's now and then - very clicky and scratchy now, too much playing on old players with not much more than a pin for a stylus!
Oh .. I ramble ... sorry ...

...and ... *******DoctorBob has VOTED *******
Must be one of the best sets of tracks for a while - shows what a "tricky synth" can bring out in folks. We will NOT be beaten!!!!!!!

yes. one thing i've noticed at there are some submissions that have really nice textures building into an edm-like drop, and then the drums kick in and sound really weak in comparison. It does take some serious effort to make good percussion but imho it's a must if the track is a dance track of any kind.z.prime wrote:While I agree this is an excellent viewpoint to have, I also think the sound design MUST be taken into account as a large factor, since it's one random crappy synth (usually) people have to deal with.

Voted.
And to add my $.02 to the discussion above. I think sound design is a huge part of the OSC that's why I think it could be cool to not even use presets. All sounds should be from an init patch, but that idea didn't gain any traction....

Voted. Very nice collection of pieces -- especially considering how challenging the synth was to work with.
Lot's of 4's and 5's. Nice work everyone!

Great month, I was thinking: is it harder to make the synth sounds outside of its standard presets, or to use its raw own sounds to make sense for something beautiful? Sound design is very important of course and the challenge is mainly about that, it seems. All the while it's another, possible, kind of challenge to make your composition fits the sounds that the synth does easily, humouring the aesthetic of the synth so to say.
Anyway, as said, it's been a nice challenge with Digits, it seems that it selected 37 tracks on its own.
So I liked almost any entry, but I wanted to rate using the full range, therefore I followed shamelessly my taste for this season. Since during these cold grey months I prefer melodies and warm slow music, while in Summer I'm more favourable to aggressive stuff. So my votes may seems unfair and if you are the kind who will check who voted what, please mind that I still appreciate the tracks that I scored low, somehow. As I said it's the mood of the season that ruled on me, with few exceptions.
[DrBob I loved your solo, but the two pianos fight each other!]
(Many thanks for the comments of SC, to zarf, Taron, Frostline and maybe someone else I forgot)
