Have you ever thought about buying from pawn shops? In my early years I too was interested in third tier brands, bought a bunch. The Furrian SX (T-style from Hondo) cured me for life from buying bargain basement new guitars.

Back when I had excessive extra money at the end of the month and little desire to save I'd hit the pawn shops weekly. I'd come home with one or two guitars a month. Even with my Variax Standard I still think about buying guitars. Just not as much.

Not familiar with that exact instrument, but +1 on the thought.

In judging guitars by price, "inexpensive" can often equal value, while "cheap" can often lead to regret.

The Squier 'Vintage Vibe' and 'Vintage Modified' series, and Epiphone line fall into the former catagory. And, if you're open to buying used, can usually be had very reasonably priced.

Having read through this thread, I haven"t seen mention [unless I missed it?] of the Slick line of guitars:

I bought a couple because I like Earl Slick, which is not always the foremost reason to buy a guitar, to play around with, and see what they are like.

I have guitars from a couple of hundred dollars up to a couple of thousand, and found the Slick guitars surprisingly playable and toneful. The pickups definitely stand out on the ones I have.

As with anything, mileage may vary. But, they deserve a look.

Edit: sorry if you read this post before I edited it, I amended "latter catagory" to "former catagory"

Neck warped,
The neck is maple with a maple fretboard. Body wasn't routed properly big gap in the neck joint.
Binding along the neck was cracked upon arrival and more cracks apeared the day of delivery. screws did not fit the bridge saddles and were shredded so there was no way to intonate. No ground. Very low output pups noisy as hell even at low settings. Looks pretty. I kind of like the neck profile as designed but the frets were uneven, the nut isn't set right. Even with binding the fret edges are sharp as hell. I could go on and on.

After all of that I thought I could turn it into a fixer upper guitar but everything is so wrong it would be cheaper for me to simply buy the real deal.

Pawn shop guitars are always an adventure.... Well... used to be when I lived in Florida.
The Samick Korean era (before greg bennet) Were always great for me. Same with Westone's and 80's (not current) JB Players.

Still haven't decided on pups. Needs them though (nov, dec, jan, usually tight for me funds wise) especially in the neck position.

Seeing as how the Fender American Standard is disappearing into the murk of history, I figured I'd better get one before they all went.
Bog standard (sorry) 2016 telecaster.

I love those guitars. Too bad they don't make that in murican standard like the MIM ones with the shaved heel and locking tuners with noiseless pups.

Post

The mim blacktop tele was sub par. The CIC Modern player plus is great sans the pups. I never thought I'd say that about CIC or Indonesian instruments.

That being said.

Beautiful Tele Standard, Werp. With or without the heel cutaway I'm sure it plays and sounds amazing.

N/M, no SS frets.

Anyone know of any Black Friday guitar deals?

Post

Not yet. I have my eye on some pickup replacements. The Carvin I posted is maybe 50 bucks less for BF, nothing spectacular (but their prices are already fair)

Black Friday has nothing to do with the serious purchaser. Especially in the musical instrument department. Black Friday sales for guitars are generally throw away "first guitar" or couldn't sell it before so let's sell it now at a cheaper price and make room for something we can.
