Ok here's the problem: somehow i've got nothing but a laptop with Core 2 duo and 512 mb ram on board for a couple of months. So i wonder, if there's a way to record at least basic demos, including guitar processing and midi-drums using such an outdated stuff. Any cpu-friendly DAWs, amp simulators etc.? Need a little help from you guys

I was running Live 9 on an old XP laptop, dual core, 1GB ram until fairly recently. Was fine, except for loading large sample libraries.

What kind of OS are you using, WinXP ?

Do you have an external sound card?

Yeah, it's XP and i use an external card (though it's pretty shitty, but anyway)

If you switch to Linux, you can use Ardour, they say that it can run on computers with as little as 256MB RAM, but that "512MB is a more reasonable memory configuration"

For WinXP I think I would go with Audacity to start with, they still support it

Not the most full featured "DAW" but allows for multi track recording, and it is free to use

Windows XP (64- or 32-bit) 64-bit (x64) requires XP Service Pack 2. 32-bit (x86) requires XP Service Pack 3. Recommended Memory = 512 MB/1 GHz

Thanks! I'm gonna see if it can beat Reaper in cpu usage

But still got a complaint about amp simulators, are there any?

Nothing can for what you need, also comparing CPU usage and specs(v5 Reaper), call it a day, you found it.

Seriously, get Reaper. Will have the smallest system footprint of them all. And they even still support Win XP AFAIK.

I'd make sure to get a new laptop though. 512 MB is like.... waaaay bottom line.

But the OP states that s/he has to stay with this lo-fi system for a couple of months, that is why s/he started the thread, to get input about DAWs that can run with 512 RAM

Maybe s/he will get a better system later, but that is not the question here.

I have a laptop with the same features and Mulab works well ,there is the free fully functional version that has very few limitations,
no installation required ,download unzip and try it
