It was bound to happen: an 80s instrument

Just as I don't get the Minimoog emulation fascination, just what was so amazing about the D50? I sure didn't hear anything that made me go wow and run out to buy one. Every synth I owned at the time, IMO, sounded much better. So what's up with this?

In addition to D-50 it contains input from about a dozen other 80's synths

Yeah, totally with you on this. It was great for it's day and the sounds are on a bunch of records, but it's not really like those sounds are somehow special from a synthesis point of view. When it came out, that flute chiff was kind of something and combined with something of a synthesizer allowed it to be both somewhat realistic as well as expressive. Samples couldn't really do that back then.wagtunes wrote:Just as I don't get the Minimoog emulation fascination, just what was so amazing about the D50? It's nostalgia I think more than anything.

Was the D50 comparable to the D10, sound wise? The D10 was my first synth (in fact, I still have it, but haven't used it in ages). I remember that the sound didn't do much for me, pad sounds aside...wagtunes wrote:Just as I don't get the Minimoog emulation fascination, just what was so amazing about the D50? The D10 was a cut down, simpler sounding budget version of the D50.RichN wrote:Was the D50 comparable to the D10, sound wise? The D10 was my first synth (in fact, I still have it, but haven't used it in ages). I remember that the sound didn't do much for me, pad sounds aside...
Similar to the DX9/21 versus the DX7. So the D10/20/110/MT32 sounded noticeably inferior to the flagship of the time D-50.

D-10 was second generation D-50/LA synthesisbeely wrote:The D10 was a cut down, simpler sounding budget version of the D50.

The Roland D10 was essentially a repackaged Roland MT32 module which itself was a much more simplified version of the D50. So it maybe 'second generation' but definitely not a patch on the D50.

I actually did that, in Alchemy then.ghettosynth wrote:Well, that's pretty much what it is. I don't really understand the appeal of the D50. It's not even multisampled, it's pretty basic. I have a copy of the factory raw waves, they're out there. You can knock up your own basic D50 patches in Kontakt in short order if you're even halfway competent.Numanoid wrote:And that is why I call you a Proghettosynth wrote:A laughable incorrect description. As I remember you earlier called the D-50 "a rompler with shitty filters" and that stuck in my mind as a sober description
It was fantastic for its time, but that was then.
I allso happens to have the raw waves
