I have a plugin (Madrona Labs Virta) that I need to route MIDI to but the plugin is meant to reside on an audio track. Is there a way to do this? Its easy in Ableton Live but I can't figure out how to do this in Cubase.

u can make variaudio follow a chord track or midi track i think

If the plugin accepts MIDI input, then you should be able to just insert the plugin on your audio track, then select the plugin from the Output section of the MIDI track.

And you can use MIDI sends to route that MIDI track to several places at the same time.

is it possible to route MIDI to an audio track in Cubase 8.5?
