Yeah ... Uncanny and The Survivalist are pretty good recent examples too. I really enjoyed Under The Skin as well.
Plus Moon, Primer and Europa Report.
Europa Report was great

also enjoyed this

Ah, yes, indeed. That's another good one.
An idiot on Set Theory:

I only discovered this a few months ago. A very disquieting film with a great storyline and soundtrack. Highly recommended.

Moon was awesome. Europa report, not so much.

But I digress, those are not classics. Don't remember what I said originally but it's going to be the ones that cause thought process: POTA, Soylent Green, Rollerball, Logans Run, Silent Running, A boy and his dog, etc etc etc.

There are plenty of really great scifi movies since then, but they pretty much nailed it.

Haven't seen Uncanny, but looks exactly like Ex Machina, the trailer even had the same lines :?

Under the Skin was good yes, still need to see Survivalist!

Moon was a disappointment, story was such a generic sci-fi shortie. Well done and all but I felt like watching something for the 57th time.

Hardly classics, true.

Colossus The Forbin Project is a must see movie, sci-fi or not! It's really great!

It is. Was it the first AI/takeover?

Forbidden Planet. The precursor to Star Trek, with a tight script, great acting, good FX even now, and Anne Francis skinny dipping. ;)

Some excellent ones mentioned, especially Quatermas and the Pit (original movie, and even better the 6-part original black and white TV version).

For me there's something very special about 1950s scifi. Movie-makers knew how to create tension, the soundtracks were often innovative, the actors were acting rather than wiggling their eyebrows, and there was no "get out of jail card" like today by simply stuffing the movie with over-the-top showreel computer effects. Importantly they often emphasized science-fiction concepts, whereas remakes often dull the sci-fi edge and just overlay a cliched drama scenario.

- The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 version with great soundtrack. The 2008 version is rubbish)
- Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (original 1956 version. The 1978 version is OK)
- The Thing (1951 version)
- The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957. What an ending!)
- When Worlds Collide (1951)
- War of the Worlds (1953. A bit cheesy in parts but still way better than any remake)
- This Island Earth (1955)
- Forbidden Planet (1956. Absolutely brilliant.)
- The Fly (1958. Again superior to the remakes)

And to venture into the 60s with just a couple:
- The Man With the X-ray eyes (1963. Another great ending)
- Creation of the the Humanoids (surprisingly deep and more relevant today than ever)
- The Time Travelers (extremely cheesy in parts, but has a few classic moments)

Awesome picks, thanks guys! Quite a few old ones I haven't seen... yet :)

1927s metropolis would be the first film with ai...and im pretty sure 1965s alphaville was the first to have an ai controlling a society.

there were some tv shows before colossus as well...but i stuck to films.

I don't remember that at all (generally hoovered up anything remotely scifi at that time...)

Will give it a watch sometime.

Slightly related, watched 'The Stone Tape' again last week (hadn't since the 80s). Yeah, still pretty chilling, definitely has that cheap 70s telly vibe that I found so terrifying as a kid (Sapphire and Steel, Paperhouse, Children of the Stones etc).
