They couldn't be more different.. Barricade is extremely clean, Frontier is much dirtier sounding. I certainly wouldn't use Frontier on the master (unless for creative purposes).
I find Frontier more 'honest" whereas Barricade is more "plastic"(like all Waves plugins). The best thing I ever did was develop an ear for the plastic and uninstall it :)
Can you elaborate further? Do you think this is more of a taste thing? I stopped using Barricade a while back - even though it is very clean there's something about what it does that I wasn't quite keen on. I found the same with Reelbus after using it for a while.
When I go to EQ something, I don't want a predefined factory curve put over everything to begin with. I can do more with plugins that leave everything there for me to mold myself. You notice it after many years. Try Slate things compared to Waves, they leave everything there for you :) or maybe it's just bad internal filters, either way it's "plastic" in there :)
*just to note: It's easier to tell with a live instrument, guitar or anything else. Soft Synths by design are plastic, so the test won't help your ear much if you use them. The best unplastic "synth" out there to test with is UVI workstation, I've been really enjoying the Mark79 by acoustic samples as of late. I highly recommend it. I may post up some free presets around Christmas. I've been adding things in the multi-effect section, like switching out cabinets, etc..it can go as deep as you want it to.

N/M, I get it......it's for their "customers"

Should say that......carry on, nothing to see here.

You also receive Frontier for free as a D16 customer. Not sure though if you actually have to own a product from them, or if you just have to have a registered account. I guess the latter, but no guarantees!

Post

Edit, nope. All you need is to register. Maybe it takes time? What was happening was when I went to log in it would ask for a SN

Anyways, all up now.

Quite liking Frontier here for track limiting, but i wouldn't use it on the master bus unless it's followed by another brickwall limiter. Even with the softclip option enabled it overshoots regulary over the dialed in threshold value. Seems to happen less in "normal" quality mode than the others.

Post

I noticed that. Seems that my very initial thoughts are a great character giver for some things.

No it is not honest. I tested frontier with spectrum analyzer, it generate harmonics.
Maybe you feel honesty with distorted sound.
But Don get me wrong. the sound of frontier is quiet good for me.
I use it for drum bus quiet a lot.
