OK, how about this for a solution, would it work?

After shipping it is $223 up front and $149/mo for three months after, which would fit into my budget.

* 3x Lexicon Audio interface
* 12x 3.5mm M/M cable
* 6x stereo breakout cable

In that case you can save yourself 50 bob and don't buy any audio interface. Probably for your needs the Line In of your PC will probably do the job just fine.

When I started recording my band I had just two SoundBlaster cards, forming a 4-track harddisk recording machine. Costed just an extra 30 bob for the cheapest sound card. I used that setup to record the drum kit of my band, on just 4 tracks. You can do the same with just one stereo recording channel and overdub the drumbrute tracks.

But then, there's probably VSTi's that offer simular sounds like the DrumBrute. Being analog doesn't make it that special you know :shrug:

Stunningly sage advice from BertKoor. Save some dosh and use saved funds to meet friends at the pub and get a drum machine app for that thing in your pocket instead and your good to go.

The Alpha setup is still messy.

Given the numbers you ran above. I still reckon the XR12 plus cheap tablet ain't far out of your scope and WILL give you what you want.
Think of it as a digital touchscreen submixer plus 4 FX sends plus DYNAMICS on EVERY channel.
Rock solid, Easy to use and minimum cable requirements. (These last 3 features will honestly make or break your workflow, us old hacks, we know :) )

You could fund this very viable combo for around $300. Bonus prize is you could install a cheap MIDI sequencing app on the tablet which can clock to your DAW as well as trigger the DrumBrute and work in tandem with or in place of the onboard sequencer.

Your DAW doesn't necessarily have to be the Holy Grail if a good intermediary would suffice.

Lucky times you live in. Stuff like this didn't exist 30 years ago.
Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).

Like Ive already said, you have no guarantees that multiple soundcards of the same type will work, plus the Alpha is also very old, and has no driver support beyond Windows 7. Given that much newer generation 6-in soundcards can be got used or B-Stock for the same sort of money (ie $20 more for a 'like new' Komplete Audio 6 from the same vendor) Im really not convinced by that option.

Honestly, I would just look into getting a second hand Delta 1010 or something with a bunch of inputs. Though I guess I wouldn't particularly recommend the Delta 1010 as mine has currently crapped out due to bad capacitors, it emits a square wave sound with any output I hook it up to. Anyways, I do so wish there were more interfaces like that, that just accepted a bunch of line level input and outputs. I don't need any damn mic pre's or phantom power.

I hadnt seen mention of this before, but its got a bunch (8/8) of line IO plus 8 more mic pres, for a shade over £200/$250 retail. 16in/8out at that price aint half bad.
