So, Turner Classic Movies tonight played the three Harry Palmer spy flicks in a row (The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin, and The Billion Dollar Brain) and being a movie nerd and lover of espionage flicks I was compelled to watch.
The scores of all three films are great but Barry's score for The Ipcress File was above and beyond the others.
In the main theme, there is some sort of stringed instrument that made me think of traditional Russia instruments or something. So, being very curious, I began to look into such. Perhaps a balalaika...a tenor or bass balalaika....but it certainly sounds as if a pick is used and as far as I've seen/read so far a balalaika is always finger picked, so....I dunno.
It seems to 'sound' like the region. Perhaps it's a German instrument? I've no idea being wholly ignorant of such.

I'm hoping someone hears this and it's immediately and absolutely 100% familiar to them/you.
In this vid it starts at 22 seconds in.

Perhaps an oud? Though it seems it's traditionally played in a very gentle manner it does have the beautifully 'messy' and organic tone of what is heard on the aforementioned score? This is driving me nutty. I hope someone knows for certain. :)

It's a cimbalom, or hammered dulcimer, played in this case and on the theme of The Persauders by John Leach.

Hm. A few moments ago outside having a few sips of rum and over-indulging in cigarettes I wondered if perhaps the instrument was struck rather than picked. It seems (as I noted earlier....more...for lack of a better term...'messy' than a dulcimer). It seems less exacting than it or a lute or mandolin if you get my meaning. Though, as I said and fully admit, I AM ignorant in this area.
I wonder if you're absolutely right. I hope so. I'll look into the instrument in question. I really appreciate the direction.
Thank you, sir. :)

I suspect 'Third Man' influence for zithers-as-eastern-bloc

Ah! Nearly inarguable reference. Nice. Thanks whyterabbyt for the further knowledge. I feel more than sorta foolish for not realizing this was a hammered dulcimer, but of course my experience with such is the light and soft and 'airy' playing of such in our own local Renaissance festival (GARF) so I certainly do not commonly hear the full range and full attitude of the instrument. Heh. :)

It's certainly an Eastern instrument of some sort, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

It could be reamped. Or maybe it's just oldschool LoFi which cuts the treble badly :D

John Barry's stuff always sounds really good.
