Hey folks, i want to get a midi controller keyboard and i look for the 49-keys edirol pcr-50. But.. i want to learn piano with a teacher and i wonder if the 49 keys will be enough for playing with both hands or should i go for the 61 keys PCR-80.

Thanks!

trust me, if you want to learn "piano style" playing- get AT LEAST 61 keys. I have a 49 key Roland PC-200, and it drives me crazy to have to play those unweighted synth style keys. first chance I get, I am getting an 88 weighted key midi controler

edit- know anyone who wants my PC-200 mk II?

I'm with S_A_P on this. I used to have a 49 key controller and it drove me nuts! This even though I've only had one year of "formal" piano lessons. The PCR-80 (which I have now) is nice, I'd prefer a 76key controller but I can't find one with knobs and sliders (sigh).

Go for all the keys you can afford! Hitting the transpose button in the middle of recording is a bother.

Thanks, i think i will wait until i have the money for the pcr-80. Although i guess the Keystation 61es with semi-weighted keys from m-audio will be more suitable and costs only $160. But has no knobs and i'm not so convinced by m-audio quality...

later edit:

I guess this is will do the job but too expensive for me..

76-keys might be better for some as 88 is too much unless you "need" C7, C8(!?) or C0

But FOR SURE a good velocity response in the very least. Its frustrating to have some notes at 56 some at 110 all played at the same pressure, or all at or near 127 or 33, with barely anything doable in between.

Also, do a finger glide across the keybed to see if the keys catch you thumb or finger.
