MIDI stretch

What software allows me to do this:

I tend to play solo passages to use as a basis of a new song idea without a click track or metronome, to get a more intuitive, soulful flow for the music.

But the tempo might be whatever...

Say, if I have played at 112.4 for example, and the DAW tempo (I use Bitwig) does not match, everything is off grid.

What I would like to do, is the same I do with audio files: stretch or compress them, until the onsets of the notes match the grid.

Also ripple editing would be nice, so when I move a note, all notes after it move automatically.

Ableton Live can do this.

You can create a tempo map in Reaper or Studio One that will follow your audio performance; that way you can keep your original tempo.
Tutorials for it on youtube; I didn't see one for Bitwig.

Ah, I've been using Reaper too a lot, I'll explore that. I thought tempo mapping in Reaper is just something you can do afterwards to change the grid in specific locations.

I'm not sure about Reaper; I don't use it much anymore. I can do it in Studio One using Melodyne.

Yup, Cubase on the clip level with time stretch. I've been hoping they'll update it so that it works on a note-selection in the piano roll too (aka Reaper / FL Studio).

In Reaper you lassoo the notes and then (if memory serves) Alt-click-hold the end of the note selection and you can timestretch the notes together (so that lengths and starting times scale proportionately) so that your melody fits into whatever timing you want.

FL Studio I think actually has a little arrow at the edge of a lassoo selection that lets you timestretch the note selection rather than just adjusting the individual note lengths.

Ableton can both stretch time like the Cubase description above (this will have the "ripple effect" OP wants), and stretch selected notes like the Reaper description above (the other notes stay where they are, no "ripple effect").

Ableton also allows to drag the middle of a selection of MIDI notes, kinda like grabbing a rubber band, stretching on one side and shortening on the the side (similar to dragging a "Warp Marker" on audio). Could be useful if you slowed or accelerated mid-perfromance.

Sonar also has several tools to help you to deal with that, from the Fit Improvisation command, to midi stretching, even Melodine. The thing is that if you freely play without a click, you probably are not playing at a fixed tempo, so just stretching midi might not do the trick. What you need is extracting a tempo map from your improvisation, and then apply it to your project, so the grid fits precisely to the notes you played, and not the other way around. In other words, what you need to stretch is the grid, and not the notes.
