Hey Man! Haha cheers. It was years ago and I haven't touched PS in ages for plugin or audio stuff (just some game dev and photo editing). Hope all is well. This synth is a lot of fun!

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Don't be afraid. He's a good wizard. Wears a long white pointy hat and smokes a twisty pipe. Think more Fizbane and Gandalf kind of wizard.

ENV1 wrote:... I just checked and it doesnt happen at all in energyXT and REAPER, so it seems to be a host-specific thing.
just checked it in 32-bit Maschine and it seems much better. no problems when moving another plug-in GUI over the top of it, but let's say i have Britson sitting "on top" of it. if i click on Cobalt to bring it "into focus", it re-draws for a split second when Britson moves/drops behind it. pretty sure the same happens in Ableton.

haven't checked it in 64-bit Ableton or Maschine. i don't use any other hosts myself, can't really check anything else.

spent a bit more time with Cobalt while doing this. pretty cool synth really, definitely has a sound of its own. not sure how much i'd use it and it's got some pretty odd quirks/limitations, but i'm glad to have it.

The slow GUI drawing is caused by using GDI+, a decision I've long since regretted.

I'm working on a solution, but it will take time. Also, it will probably mean switching to plain bitmaps, which will increase the footprint of the plugin.

I've posted this many times over the years, but it seems that I just can't resist the opportunity to do so again. The DW6000 was my very first synth, back in 1984 or 85 (I'm getting old and forgetful). I still have it stuffed in the back of my closet. In my opinion, it remains the WORST sounding synth ever made! So obnoxiously bright with those resynthesized/additive digital waveforms, and even a true analog filter couldn't save it. The thing is nearly impossible to fit into a mix with other synths. Why anyone would want to recreate it is beyond me.

The ESQ1, on the other hand, was quite nice.

Ever own a Kawai K4(r)?
You need to limit that rez, bro.

Just a minor update. My hope is to change how the background is drawn to using plain GDI while the graphics that require alpha blending will continue using GDI+. In my tests, it seems like this greatly reduces the draw-in problem.

Also, I'm moving the graphics outside of the dll. They'll be in a separate folder. You'll be able to replace the images in the folder with your own if you want to re-skin the plugin.

cobalt is one of those synths that sounds great, however there are other synths that can
make the same sounds. I always seem to reach for the synths that sound great AND have
a clear, well laid out, inviting GUI. because i am a DIY sounds kind of guy.

I may me moved to make a light gray with black text GUI for this. (suprised?) hahaha

thanks so much for the re-skinning decision Mr. Sanford....YOU ROCK!

Thats great. Much appreciated.

Any chance you could externalize the definition file for the UI as well? Id love to fix all those little positional inconsistencies i was talking about earlier, in fact i wouldnt even mind making a whole new UI with a whole new layout, making it wider and less tall so it fits better on the screen.
