On the other hand i doubt that really many will take advantage of that. Most will just buy, when it's being released, and not care about some grace period stuff, or even are being capable of using it, because they strategically bought the update at some point.VitaminD wrote:With the huge amount of talk here of using the grace period to skip versions, I could see them pulling it or shortening the timeframe or just going to a decision per account situation.

Perhaps. Yet floating the idea out to the world and then asking a Steinberg rep about how insure they can take advantage is probably not the best idea..chk071 wrote:On the other hand i doubt that really many will take advantage of that. They also don't do the grace period as a favor to us, they do it to ensure sales continue and provide positive cash flow in the periods where everyone's natural inclination is to wait for the update, also they do it to avoid large amounts of unsellable stock in DVD copies of cubase which would impact their distributors. The fact that we can game it to our advantage is fairly immaterial to them. that's how I got into cubase, I bought a close out cubase 7 within the grace period for 8.5. I saved a whole ton of money, but then here I am, waiting to shell out for the new version, and I wouldn't be a cubase user without that deal.

But christmas time is always hot sales period and welcomed gift..to themselves maybe....

I now have Cubase 7.5. What would be the best strategy to get V9?ShawnG wrote:They also don't do the grace period as a favor to us, they do it to ensure sales continue and provide positive cash flow in the periods where everyone's natural inclination is to wait for the update, also they do it to avoid large amounts of unsellable stock in DVD copies of cubase which would impact their distributors. How long typicality is the grace period?
This I assume will be announce shortly?

The last several grace periods have been about a month and a half. For early December releases (which the last few have been), the grace period was October 15th in every one of them. So if it DOES come out in December as rumored, I imagine a purchase now would fall in the grace period. Obviously, no guarantees until it actually comes out. The fact that Guitar Center said it was coming probably means something, but when I asked Guitar Center support, they said they have no information on that and I would have to ask Steinberg, lol.Kalamata Kid wrote:I now have Cubase 7.5. Once the V 9 release is announce will I if it helps still be able to buy V8.5 to get a better price for V9.koolkeys wrote:The last several grace periods have been about a month and a half. What I am asking judging from previous releases what would be the best strategy for me with Cuabse 7.5 wanting to get V9?
Obviously I have no clue about these matters.

If you can find a retailer that has spare copies, sure. And some of them likely will. But I would guess that Steinberg and many select retailers like Sweetwater will instantly stop selling 8.5. You would have to go to shops like JRR Shop or elsewhere to check their inventory.Kalamata Kid wrote:Once the V 9 release is announce will I if it helps still be able to buy V8.5 to get a better price for V9.koolkeys wrote:The last several grace periods have been about a month and a half. Ideally, Steinberg would announce the release a couple of days before they release it, and you would have time. Or you could watch closely and snipe a sale of 8.5 from them or another retailer the minute you see the announcement. You never know.

On the Steinberg.net I guesstimating looks like to upgrade now from Cubase 7.5 to 9 will be $200.koolkeys wrote:If you can find a retailer that has spare copies, sure. And some of them likely will. So I need find an upgrade path from 7.5 to 8.5 for well under $200 let's say $150.
On Steinberg.net 7.5 to 8.5 is $150 but that offer will likely disappear when V9 is announced.
I could not find V7.5 to V8.5 upgrade online. I will look again later.
edit: I am not certain if I will upgrade to V9. I need first to look at V9 feature list.

So if, like me, you are on 7.5, then there are really only two things to consider if you want to upgrade. 1) Will Steinberg change the policy with respect to activation vs date of purchase, unlikely, and 2) will Steinberg offer a sale that is lower priced than the current upgrade price, possibly, that part is a gamble.
If you don't think that they're going to change the policy just buy the upgrade and leave the activation code in your email until after the release date.

It has been the first Wednesday in December for the last 4 releases. So hopefully December 7th.Ciberithm wrote:The last 4 releases have been on December 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with the 2nd for the latest release. One could see a pattern here and predict this year will be on the 1st, but all previous dates have also been on Wednesday. So I predict either tomorrow (not likely) or December 7th.
