Might be slightly different worded in English (page always jumps to German for me), bur it clearly states "before", while other posts about this (release of C8 and C8.5) state "also possible after".

Who knows what rules apply this time around

And I consider the "always released on 1st Wednesday of December" a myth. Else that thing would have been released last week already. :tu:
This is the english link, which also states before.

Does anyone have any actual experience with this?

Yes, wordings are important.

Many products on internet say "free download" which basically could mean, yes the download is free - but to run and use it you need a license.

I activated my CP 8.0 key on dec. second when 8.5 was out - and doing so it automatically converted into 8.5 key by eLicenser.

Strictly I have read Steinbergs idea as Grace Period being having activated within a certain period before new release. If you activate previous version after new release, that it strictly is not Grace Period, but you always are entitled to latest version that is out when activating - talking previous version then. So buying what's in stock in stores out there entitle to newest disregarding how long after - within dot5 length or so.

More detailed explanation here actually:

Going from the product and down to grace period - rather than from support and grace period which is shorter text.

Thanks, your link is quite explicit, emphasis mine.
Customers activating an older version of Cubase or Cubase Artist (from version 6), whereas a newer version is already available, receive from Steinberg once (!) a so-called free Grace Period update to activate the current version available to that time.

The link is down again for the purchase...but that is normal for their testing purposes. So I do expect to see it REAL soon.

Just kidding. I just wonder what would be if they didn't release now. I mean, some people (a few i would think) seem so accustomed to them to releasing every 2 years, and taking advantage of the grace period, that they forget that it's some kind of goodwill thing the companies do, to compensate for people who bought the previous version, not knowing that a new version will come now. At the very least, several pages of discussing this looks a bit cheapskateish. Also gotta remember that, with your purchase, you pay for future development, and a healthy company, and if you want to go on using the software, then it's recommendable to support that development. That doesn't mean one wouldn't be supposed to take advantage of sales, and stuff like that, but, if everyone would take the grace period thing, they'd cut that, and that would be uncool for the people who are really supposed to take advantage of this, the people NOT knowing that there will be a new version very soon.

You need to look at the specific grace period pages for details on the Cubase specific grace periods. The page linked to above is a generic page. This page shows that you can activate even after a release is out. It also shows the actual release date and grace period start date. You can Google and find this page for the last several updates.

First find! Well done. Yay to mixer undo (expected but welcome by pretty much everyone I'd imagine). Sampler track - oh well.
