hm, i still have LP9 installed... i guess i could do my project in LP9 this month...EDGEK8D wrote:anyhow, my damn Synth 1 64-bit AU filter is broken too. not the end of the world, but a bit of a disadvantage. it works fine with 32-bit AU on LP9, but I can't stand LP9 now that I'm used to LPX.

There was some discussion about this, and as you mentioned, it's possible to get 90% of the way there with the freebies, but we thought it would be interesting as an experiment to allow the commercial plugs. For many of us it's more a matter of workflow and time spent -- I would rather be spending time working on the song than trying to get a free compressor to sound as good as something that I'm used to using and can quickly dial in exactly what I want. If it screws up the competition it will revert.EDGEK8D wrote:whats all this talk about commercial plugins being used?
i thought the deal was stock and freebies only. if u can't make a decent mix with the crazy amount of tools we all have, then its hopeless with expensive 3rd part plugs as well. i have tons of softube, slate, fabfilter, uhe, sountoys, etc......and I can get 90% of the way there without them. kinda silly when you think about it, paying a premium for a smidge of goodness.
anyhow, my damn Synth 1 64-bit AU filter is broken too. not the end of the world, but a bit of a disadvantage. it works fine with 32-bit AU on LP9, but I can't stand LP9 now that I'm used to LPX.
Good luck all.
The 64 bit AU filter is broken, so us Mac users are at a bit of a disadvantage. I also can't deal with LP9 -- I tried going back for this and realized I would rather live without the filters.

Thanks for the presets! There are several repeats, as much we only obtain 24.000!574X wrote:Ah the classic Nord Lead II based synth! What fun!![]()
This thing has more presets than you can shake a high tech digitizer stick at!
Between that and the ability to use industry standard plugins *cough-presets-cough* it sounds like this is preset month. -but it's like SeamlessR says, presets don't make the track.
I recall a metaphor of baking a cake from scratch, versus the art of eating the cake. ...wait that's not it.![]()
I've been able to make tracks with only this modest pack:

So, is that in effect this month, or are we just talking about it?
I agree, that 3rd party plugins are about adding color, but also are much easier to dial in, and typically have abetter workflow feature-wise.
I'm fine with trying, but my problem with this plan is that people with newer computers have an advantage. I know I can have bounced to all audio, no instruments, and my mixing plugins can still bring my computer to its knees if its a busy project.
Why not? Spice things up a bit.

Well, people with newer computers have an advantage anyway.

If a new computer was the solution to rocket me into first place in OSC then I would buy one tomorrow

I personally like the idea of being limited in some ways. Isn't this also what OSC is about?
Plus it has an ethical/philosophic side to it as well, since we live in a world where consumption is king and bigger is better i think it makes kind of a statement to be content with few things.

These interminable discussions of pro and against commercial plugins happened before, more than once. I'm sooo tired of them...
I'd say let's wait until the end of this month's OSC, see how things turns out and then have a poll.

What advantage "anyway" is that? As we are not allowed to bounce to audio, and typically OSC synths are CPU light, its strictly 3rd party plugin stress and the number of VCC channels, and oversampling plugins I can shove onto the mixer.rghvdberg wrote:Well, people with newer computers have an advantage anyway.

Personally, I feel like in our society based on infinite growth and constant consumerism, I like the idea of keeping things freebie.
No, life isn't fair......but OSC is about as fair as it gets. If there is a vote, my answer is "no". If anyone wants to use 3rd party plugins, there are dozens of contests going on all of the time. Anyone can join this, regardless of skill level. Just need a computer and a DAW. I probably have around $10-15K in software.....how is that a level playing field for somebody with just stock? While we're at it, lets use commercial drum samples, vocals, and modulation.....before you know it, its just a regular monthly song contest.

No, it doesn't improve your skills at all. If you've ever used something like Slate VCC or Softube Console 1; there is a cumulative effect. The plugin is strapped across every single channel; every synth, drum sound, effect, bus, send/return channel, sub-mix channel, and the master. A quick bypass and the difference in the depth of sound is staggering. Like using Eventide hardware fx, its almost like cheating.ATN69 wrote:If a new computer was the solution to rocket me into first place in OSC then I would buy one tomorrow..unfortunately I can't buy skills. I'm not whining for me ya jokers, I have a quad core i7 iMac w/ 32GB RAM and can use CPU heavy plugins seemingly forever. I'm worried about laptop bedroom guys who work their tails off each month on a 2009 HP laptop and are able to get into the top 10 of the contest sometimes because they squeeze every bit of life out of that laptop.
Again, what are we competing for? A few plugins? Why is it necessary then to use all the fancy stuff?
If you can't dial in a stock compressor fast enough, then that's not my problem.

I am not sure about the drums this month.Jesus C wrote:Hey guys I wanna participate... in summary, everything must be done with synth1 even the drums, I can use freeware effects in mixing and no samples/commercial fx?
It's too difficult to make drums with this synth.
Cheers.

As far as I understood, you may use Synth1 as VSTi only plus free or commercial FX plugins (but no modulated Fx, no distortion).
It's allowed to use presets (Mr. Wobble banks 1 and 2 have some nice drums). It's too difficult to make drums with this synth.
