I've never had this issue with the prior 7 versions of Cubase; how do you get the grey background to stretch across a 2 monitor setup? It seems it either likes to be pseudo-minimized at the top on a bar, or full screen grey background on ONE monitor only. I can't get anything in between so I can drag the size out bigger across both monitors. This a 'feature' or am I just being an idiot? All the other items (mixer, transport, etc.) will gladly go across both monitors, just not the background.

Normal behavior usually is that if windows is maximized, it's on one monitor only.
To extend it needs to be in normal mode.
But it's a bit unusuall in Cubase, reverting to menu bar at top and desktop come through - if Cubase loose focus.
Either way, I use second monitor to undock mixer console and place that there - not main window.
So never tried that extend thing with 8.5.

Right, exactly. If you maximize it's only one monitor. Normal mode though forces the "File Edit etc." bar at the top, and I can't drag it out from any side. If I move it from the top, it pops BACK to the top. I've never seen behavior before, not from any program, period. I suppose I could change my background to just plain grey, but it doesn't explain why it's doing what it's doing. Since some time that it behaves like this here. If I remember well, it used ti have the grey background also when not maximized, but now, if I have it in normal mode, I see MY desktop background, and not the grey background. I only see the grey background when Cubase is maximized. I'm in Windows 7 x64.

It is strange choice they made - as well as the not allowing any windows theme etc - I had to change that to install a year ago.
You can move entire bar over to other screen - but not size it on system menu even - that part i grayed.
Maybe they got problems when tracks got too long, and scrolling over two monitors or something - thinking stationary cursor thing where all tracks are scrolled in pixels kind of. And it becomes strange getting stationary between two monitors or something.
Maybe they changed something in Cubase 9 that is released today - you could have a look asking somebody who ran it. The other thread with Darren that made video reviews and books and stuff maybe.
Found as way to do it: Load a project, restore screen to normal and project windows become separate - that window you can stretch over to other monitor if you want.
