 the coninuting saga of "the download wars":
well it appears now that the download problem is my problem :(. last night i got home clicked on the internet and no connection, clicked again and no connection, again and no connection..

ok, it occured to me that about 6 weeks or so ago i recieved a msn message telling me that my computers time zone and msn's time zone weren't in sync and asked me if i wanted to configure. i did but in msn messanger i saw that the time zone was correct. i quickly checked out my computers time zone and it appears to be correct. ok i thought this was a simple case of the computer or msn's quirkiness. i didn't think that this might be some kind of virus or msn corruption. i have had various error messages in the past that in the end meant nothing.

i decided to do a one day system restore in order to get back my internet connection and it worked. so i went to mr. big ticks sight and began the download which in my download manager said 1hr.45min. i thought back again to the last few 1hr.45min. downloads of the weekend and it seemed to me that the downloads weren't taking that much time. i watched this download very closely and in actual time from beginning to end it took about 45min. only.
i chose to put the download in the program directory.
when i clicked the installer i got the same message as always "the set-up files are corrupted please download another copy". no thanks not yet.

so the first thing i can do is install and run some anti-virus software to check for viruses. however i'm inclined to believe there is some kind of msn corruption going on. i will call them this weekend at the earliest. also, maybe my computers time zone somehow got changed and is affecting the process. i'll double check that today, unless my computer has turned into a bird and has flown away. there is still the issue as to why even with a deleted dll. and what appeared to be a final release rhino 2 in standalone,i couldn't get the final release rhino 2 to overwrite the pre-release rhino 2. i'm thinking that maybe some small part of what appeared to be a successful first download was corrupted. ah corruption gotta love it. well thats my story and all i can say is that the process continues and for those thinking about buying rhino believe me it's worth it. if and when i'm able to download the demo i let you know. it could be i'm simply not smart enough for all of this. adios :P

Well Book it seems to me you are having one heck of an internet and PC experience going on there – for sure not many can afford two pc’s, one for the general computing side of things like the net, word processing and email etc. and one as their audio work station.

Normally the argument for not having anti virus and firewalls installed is for the audio workstation where the user is trying to get every ounce of processor power and memory possible.

To not have these tools installed on a net connected computer will at some point cause problems – it’s very easy to pick up virus worms just by being connected and not having a fire wall in place – let alone an anti virus to catch malware from malicious websites or virus infected email.

I would have to agree that the installation of an anti virus would be a cool move – something like Norton internet security (though a hungry processor application) will have the firewall and necessary anti virus built in (plus easy to use).

I would install it and run it to check all files on your system – I would also try and find a way not to keep using system restore as this in itself will cause problems when things get partly installed but not fully removed on a subsequent restore (depending on the settings) it almost feels like it would be worth doing a clean install of your operating system and starting again – with the necessary anti virus and firewall in place – plus a careful install of items one at a time and make sure everything is working before the next install of something else (one heck of a lot of work – but most of us have been there, right at the beginning of getting into computers and audio workstations) you have a big learning curve going, it’s going to take time, trial and error – but in the end everything will click into place with a bit of patience. (yes it’s frustrating at times – but perseverance will be all the more rewarding once you have mastered the drawbacks)

Some software that may be of interest to help secure your computer.

Norton AntiVirus – internet security (firewall & AV)

If you just wanted the Anti-Virus then look at this link

But you would also need a firewall to block worms and hackers to your computer (plus key loggers dialling out from your PC) – this one is highly recommended.

They may still even do their free version.

I was also wondering if a Zip archive of Rhino2 could be done with a clickable reg file where if the pc is messed up with installers it could still be possible to extract to a directory click the reg file and scan the vst listing – this is just a thought for situations like this that ‘Tick might consider ( I have not asked him but I popped it here anyway) – I don’t know but thought I would mention it – you would still need to get your pc secure.

Also don’t forget the windows update – super important these days as many security issues exist that need to be plugged on a regular basis regardless of security software installed.

For easy downloading with a dodgy ISP and dial up modem I also recommend this program – Mass Downloader available from this link

I hope some of this helps.
