For me GENESIS was the best prog band, followed by YES.
But I 've also loved King Crimson, Camel, Ange (for the frenchies ;-)), Rush, Kansas, Alan Parsons, Barclay James Harvest, etc...

The prog and best period of Genesis start with Trespass and ends with Wind and wuthering.

And then they where three is a strange album : good compositions but the sound is agressive and it looks like a caricature of prog and not prog itself.
Duke is good but some compositions are crap (man of our times, misunderstanding, etc..), the best piece is cul de sac, but the sound of the album is too monotone : everywhere you have this coloured Tony Banks piano (but I adore Tony Banks).

The albums after (Abacab, Genesis, etc...) are not so bad, but it's no more prog.
The favorite piece of this period is the Home by the sea suite.

Calling all station is the only Genesis album I don't like.
Well.... bottom line here is that it's pretty amazing we're still discussing their music in 2004.
No matter which era you like the most.... their music still fires up a 9 page thread around here. That's pretty amazing to me..... :)

I still enjoy most of their 70's albums although I've been lisening to them for more then 20 years (I'm only 37) AMOF... I enjoy almost every album they made. Even TONIGHT TONIGHT TONIGHT is a great song.......
I picked up the Wembley '86 DVD a few weeks ago and it fuckin' rules.

GENESIS RULES! :hail:

IMHO anything after TOTT started to suck. "Suppers Ready", "Carpet Crawl" and "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" are amongst the best.

("When the sun beats down and I lie on my bench I can always hear them talk. Me? I'm just a lawnmower. You can tell me by the way I walk.". Classic.)

I saw them in 1980 or so with Daryl Stuermer. Great gig.

The medley they did on the WE CAN'T DANCE tour finally did justice to WATCHER OF THE SKIES..... IMO. Daryl Stuemer finally gave balls to that solo.
To me they still rules back then.
f**k! I even like the LOOSE IN PARIS DVD from Phil Collins. :band:

Enjoy! Nice to see some Genesis fans around here.
I listen to either Foxtrot, SEBTP, or one of the discs of Lamb every day. :-)

The above quote from Squids reminded me of one of Miles Davis' guitar players late in his life, whose first exposure to Miles was hearing part of Sketches of Spain somewhere....

...and so went to the record store to get some Miles, and bought Bitches' Brew. :-)

Anyone who wanted to download the live Lamb stuff requested on the previous page should know to do it by tomorrow because I'll probaby be taking it down. I put it up temporarily for whoever was interested in hearing it. The drummer who played on it, Nick, also played on Calling All Stations. But, you can hear in these recordings what he's really capable of. He's a pretty amazing drummer. It was a lot of fun playing with him. It felt like being Genesis for an evening.

As for continuing this discussion, I tend to like bits and pieces from albums since Abacab but from Trespass to Abacab is my biggest range of appreciation for them. I didn't get into Calling All Stations. Not crazy about that singer. Where was the personality? He didn't seem comfortable. Also, I had really hoped they would go back to their roots a bit more. This was not progressive and not really commercial and I thought there would be more instrumental stuff... I was just expecting something different, especially if they had Nick at their disposal. But they ended up using another drummer too who had a more machine-like sound imo.

One cool thing not often mentioned though is the reunion for Carpet Crawlers they did for their best of compilation with both Gabriel and Collins newly singing it. That and Gabriel redoing the Lamb vocals on the box set are under-rated cool things that have happened semi-recently.

I auditioned for Gabriel on the US tour. I was actually one of a few people up for the gig because he went by his bandmate's recommendations. For example, Joy was Tony Levin's recommendation. Claude was Manu's (and apparently got the gig because Manu threatened to leave the tour if his friend didn't do it... nice Manu!), but I was Shankar's recommendatation. Shankar thought for sure that I would get it because I knew the right sounds and style and that he was the one who recommended David Sancious who got the gig before. Anyway, I didn't get the gig but I toured with L. Shankar on Gabriel's Womad festival and there was this chance that I still might get the rest of the US tour. So, in hotels where everyone was staying I'd be playing old Genesis tunes on the hotel piano (I always find it!) and if by chance PG walked by then.... :D but he never did. I didn't even bring up old Genesis the times I talked to him because I didn't want to scare him off in case he was considering me for the keyboard gig. However, had I got the gig and felt comfortable enough I would have suggested doing at least Back in NYC and perhaps a few other Lamb tunes. So, that would have been my contribution to trying to get back to some cool nostalgic stuff. Didn't happen. That would have been awesome.

What did happen was Nick, the drummer, playing with PG on a track for the Princess Diane tribute record as well as his couple of cuts with Genesis on Calling All Stations. But, if either one of them got Nick to play some old Genesis they would have had something really cool imo.

Ironically... VERY ironically IMO, Tony Levin's band with Jerry Marotta toured around and actually played Back in NYC!!!! So, I don't get it. You'd think PG would have played some Lamb tunes anyway if Tony Levin wanted to... very odd.

I don't know if you guys find this interesting or not but in case you do...

You know what I find amazing? 9 pages of Genesis discussion and not a single post from Scot.

Too busy playing with his Kyma and Bertha I expect.

Bastard.

Or eDrummist or DeWaverly or the Wookie. Oh well. :D You'd have thought we'd have pulled Scot out on ONE of these prog threads though.

I couldn't sleep and found this thread. It was amusing to sift through a thread I found interesting and then find a reference to my name (by Squids) at the end of it!

I love Genesis music all the way through Abacab. After Abacab, Genesis just seemed to lose sight of musical creativity in the name of commercial success. I realize the balance between commerce and creativity -- heck, I'm a professional marketer -- but they just seemed to care about the former (commercial success) and neglect the latter (creativity).

Tony Banks playing and creativity on early Genesis was incredible, as was Phil Collins drumming. It's amazing what a great drummer Phil was back in the 70's and how awful a drummer he has become since. Although many here may disagree, I do think that Peter Gabriel, even when he released a very commercial effort with "So," still maintained his artistic integrity and produced good music. I do not believe that good music (which I realize is a highly subjective term) must be non-mainstream, I just think it can show when an artist foresakes art for commerce and I think that is clearly what Genesis did in the 80's up until their last album (which I did not care for, but I could at least tell they were trying to produce something they enjoyed).

Now I'll jump to a reference to a band that that I don't think I've seen referenced here before, Kansas. I love their 70's stuff. Back then, Steve Walsh had my favorite male voice in rock.

For the record, I also buy new music (no pun intended)!

Sometimes I'm able to convince myself not to listen to it as a Genesis album, and suddenly it's pretty good...

Strange...

Same here :D . Don't like it like Selling England or so, but think it's underrated. And after that only I listened to some stuff of Ray Wilson, some songs are nice too imo, not too much what I like, but not bad, and my girlfriend likes that more than Peter Gabriel screaming in his early works  . (Stiltskin and newer solo).

But when I was trying to download it here at home.... they are gone!!!!
