Yeah latency on Android sucks, and making music on a tiny little phone isn't very great, and iPads are better, and a laptop is more powerful, and a desktop is even better, and a full studio filled with free musicians that do exactly what I ask them to do would be wonderful, BUT I just got a new phone and was wondering what new is out there for Android regardless :)

I LOVE Caustic 2, it is like baby Reason, it actually can do amazing things for its size, you can automate everything, it has a 3 band EQ per channel, reverb sends and delay per channel, a really good drum machine with decent sounds. You can have 5 synths, samplers, or 303 modules plus drums in a mix. That's pretty impressive on my tiny phone. The main limitation (beyond lofi sound) seems the sequencer, everything is pattern based but for composing I lay out the patterns in the sequencer in advance so they go 1-2-3-4.... and then it is pretty easy to loop through the patterns while composing and stopping the sequencer to add notes and beats. There are expansion samples out there to add to its vocabulary, and the Subsynth is pretty cool 2 OSC synth in its own right. At the very least it is a really great ringtone generator. I hope Caustic gets bought up by every Android music user so the dev has the funds to make a really great Caustic 3.

I'm not looking to make a hit record just something to fiddle with on the road and my phone is ALWAYS with me, an iPad wouldn't be, nor a laptop etc. And Android is better for me than iOS as a phone, and it has a gloriously large 4.5" screen in comparison so actually entering notes is pretty easy.

What phone did you get?

Samsung Inspire, free, my wife got it and it was too big for her, so I took it over after a week. It replaces a similar but slower, buggier Captivate. Too bad Android has such latency issues because the hardware is great and it would be really cool to have something like Garageband on this phone. I wouldn't want the much smaller iPhone because of the screen, just not usable for my aging eyes.

Why would you worry about latency if you are using it on the go? As long as you're using as a sketchpad latency doesn't really matter. Caustic reports 55ms latency on my phone, but in fact I never notice it.
Wonder whether my advice worth a penny? Check my music at Soundcloud and decide for yourself.

Well I have 93 MS, and because of latency on Android Caustic's developer doesn't support live recording from the little keyboards, so latency directly affects what and what types of apps make it onto the phone. You just need to play an iPhone with the new Garageband to see that there is a big difference and what could be possible if Google got their act together. I'm certain IK and others are ignoring Android particularly for the latency issues.

I made this just to post in this thread :) in Caustic on Android, not too complicated but not much simpler than what I make in a full DAW. Oh talent, where art thou?

I really enjoyed your track. Not something I would've put together in a million years, which is why I appreciated it. Thanks for sharing. :phones:

4 years later. New apps new question

Im looking for an app with which i can quickly put musical ideas down.
Like a rhythm or melody which pops up when im on the train.

I would prefer a simple 4track-like app but with drumpads and keyboard. Not gridbased (no stepsequencer) and not a looper.

If you are familiar with notations, Try Hum On!
Its an app which records your Hums and transcribes it into notations (still beta).
You must manually enter the data to a notation software like museScore.
