But apart from the more creative uses, wouldn't the criteria for the best reverb be the most natural room? If you're actually in a large room or hall, the reverb should sound like that and have the realistic spaciousness of that room/hall without any artificial resonances, right? Then you have many other parameters of course but that's the creative part. If that's the criteria then certainly many reverbs do not satisfy...

That's not a given. You may want a reverb that doesn't sound natural ie. Blackhole, which is a good selling reverb because of its completely unreal sound quality. Some people like the sound of old reverbs, even cheap spring reverbs. do those sound good? yes, to some (me). Going even lower on the sound quality scale are reverbs like the old Radio Shack "reverb", of which Audio Damage modelled in a plugin! There must be a market for that (me).Soarer wrote:But apart from the more creative uses, wouldn't the criteria for the best reverb be the most natural room? But if you are saying a "good reverb" is one that sounds like a real space, now you are comparing it to something specific and that's not the same as just flat out saying a reverb sound bad arbitrarily. if you are comparing a reverb to something, then state the "the something" so there is context. Including what kind of spae a lush old performance hall? a stairwell? a concrete box? Otherwise just saying "Blackhole sounds good" or "Aether sounds bad" is as good as meaningless.

Done!MeldaProduction wrote:Cool! I'm in. So take the default Room in MTurboReverb and change the Algorithm for LR1 to "10c" and set Early/late to 50%, good luck!
This is no pinnacle of virtuosic magnificence, but I used the crappy 10c reverb in a musical way. so-as not to cheat, instead of manipulating the reverb, I accentuated its "crappiness" and used the resonances in a musical way to add that high end dance of pitches. each track, of 4, was put through it's own instance, each with the same crap 10c reverb setting so I could control the mix and gain of the reverb. the early reflections were decent and i used sounds that triggered the feedback-y resonances so they played their own tune along with the main stuff. well, that was the intent.
I turned off all the reverbs and delays on the sounds except the synth shot with the feedback echo on it. no other effects used. only a limiter on the out to get the loudness up a bit. The only manipulations to the reverbs were dry mix and gain.
The fading echo at the end as the crappy reverb on it too and you can hear the nice high pitch tails trail away mingling with the decaying repeats. Sounds pretty cool.
YMMV

Yeah! And I intent to be the best worst reverb ever designer
So here's what I quickly came up with:
http://www.meldaproduction.com/temp/MTu ... rb/Dry.mp3 << dry
http://www.meldaproduction.com/temp/MTu ... /Humus.mp3
Hope that's horrible enough
. On the defense for plexuss, just in case his song wouldn't be that listenable
(of course it will!), it's not really a reverb anymore
. Anyways here are the settings (just copy and paste them using the Paste button under A-H):
http://www.meldaproduction.com/temp/MTu ... rbever.txt
I hope you'll like it, there's a lot of love from me in it!

I think you get my point, right? any reverb can literally be used to make something that sounds good especially if working outside of this challenge and one can further process the reverb sound.MeldaProduction wrote:Yeah! And I intent to be the best worst reverb ever designer

Unless, of course, we are comparing them to something specific. then yes... or even if you qualify it with adjectives like "smooth, warm, interesting, inspiring, deep, natural, airy reverb" - there are always going to be different opinions on these subjective ideas.
Honestly for me, I am always on the lookout for interesting and unique sounds because I enjoy the challenge of using them in interesting and musical ways. I also appreciate a natural sounding reverb with a lot of subjective adjectives just like anyone else.
By the way, I LOVE worstreverbever! It sound amazing. honestly. use it on a nice pad.

I get it, certainly! I'm generally speaking about more like natural reverbs. But it's true, there's nothing forbidden in music
.
I take it, as always, as kind of a challenge - is it possible to make a reverb, that would be by far more natural/realistic than every other reverb on the market? Can we evolve? (I feel like the music industry is stagnating for decades...)
I think I have sort of already proven that it is possible, and now I want to see how far we can get, on the field of natural reverberation, because that's sort of the holy grail of reverberation. I mean, it's not that hard to come up with something crazy, extreme, etc. But when you actually have the comparison, the natural spaces (at least as IRs), then it gets challenging.
So I think we understand each other, but you are still going to make some music from that piece of horrifying s*** I made for you with love, right?

And worstreverbever is a good demonstration of what you can do with MTurboReverb that you can't do with other reverbs (and perhaps justifies the "Turbo" moniker).
