I remember a certain Hollis crew doing some shit in 83 and 84. The first song that comes to mind is "Rock Box." Even that may not be the same sound, but they came out with "King Of Rock" on the next album in 84-85. This is before the 86 release of License to Ill.

Oh yeah that's right! I for some reason thought that album came out the same year. Ok then.
in the same year another rap group brought out a song called "is this the american dream" it was rapped over a bruce springsteen instrumental - i never found it again. :( :(

The name of that crew was RUN-DMC. :D

And "Rock Box" was a masterpiece. As Rick Rubin been trying to say all along: Hip-Hop/Rap and Rock & Roll were on the same mission to reach the same goals. Always has. Always will. 8)

Ban In The USA by 2 Live Crew. The year was 1990 (I think).

Griot Tradition + tribal or syncopated rhyrms ---> Slave storytelling and Negro Spirtuals --> Blues ---> Rock/Ska.toasting --->Disco/Funk ---> German Electronic music ---> US Electro-funk and Go Go ---> Hip hop (end)

The whole reason Rock shocked parents in the 50s and became a source of rebellion in the 60s was that it was 'too black', tribal, whatever for the previous generation. Its funny how things go full circle.

not now perhaps ...

... but that is what is was trying to say (or was that in the other thread ??? ) ... seperate out what things ARE from what they CAME FROM ...

... origins of hip-hop evolution (in cultural terms) ultimately come from slave culture (plus some other stuff thrown into the mix) even if nowadays it IS a purely western consumer-driven commodity-obsessed thing ...

slainte  rob
Basically, if it wasn't for black people all electronic music would sound like Kraftwerk and "phat beats" would be an insult. Why don't you just tell like it is and let everyone get over it.
I'll tell you this:

Without drums (Africa) or percussions (Latin Nations), there wouldn't have been any (pop)ular cultures at all. :(

drums or percussion?

Greensleeves is a pop tune :)

No Prince is not punk hop. Punk Hop has to have PUNK in it and I've never heard prince play punk. Prince is funky and rockin in his own right tho.
PWEI may have been a punk hop precursor along with MC 900 FT Jesus and believe it or not EMF. But they all lacked the hip hop chops and experienceto make it credible.

I suggest you listen to Fly or Die its a f**kin punk hop song. For a tune to be punk hop it HAS to have punk in it, got it?

"She Wants to Move" is questionable. The elements are there but its too crossover/mainstream which explains why it was the first single off of the album. Fly or DIe the Album is not all Punk Hop. But N.E.R.D knows what's going on in the underground so they snuck in a few punk hop tunes. This is one of them:

Fly or Die Lyrics (since Spaceman wanted them:

Fly or Die
by N.E.R.D

Oooh [x3]
Fly..
This is for the kids!
This is only for the kids!

Mummy,
Daddy,
I know,
You love me,
Bad grades,
Playstation,
Restriction,
You took it from me,
Well God forbid,
Something goes wrong,
You call,
The police,
Well guess what,
I found,
In the drawer of daddy's

Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)

Hey!

It won't be long,
Till you see me on the news!
Another soul lost at sea,
Or taking a cruise!
Gasping for air makes the righteous path,
Harder to choose.
Well its either fly or die,
Sink or swim,
Which one shall I choose!?

Stupid shrink
Get paid,
By the hour,
350.
He can't,
Figure out,
Whats wrong,
With me.
Dumba$$,
Girlfriend,
Fcuked my friend,
She's a hoe.
Try tellin,
Mumm and dad,
But they more concerned with their portfolio.

Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)

Hey!

It won't be long,
Till you see me on the news!
Another soul lost at sea,
Or taking a cruise!
Gasping for air makes the righteous path,
Harder to choose.
Well its either fly or die,
Sink or swim,
Which one shall I choose!?

Now I'm in,
With the negotiatior,
And he says to me:
"You dont wana die boy,
It's not the right time,
You have a bright mind,
You'll do great things,
In your lifetime."
I screamed "no"!
I beat his a$$,
He turned around,
I seen his wings, (bling!)
And just then,
The bell rings,
I was in school,
It was just a dream.

Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)
Oh God (Oh God)

Hey!

It won't be long,
Till you see me on the news!
Another soul lost at sea,
Or taking a cruise!
Gasping for air makes the righteous path,
Harder to choose.
Well its either fly or die,
Sink or swim,

Prince is not Punk-Hop.

But he did use Punk-Rock elements in his music on the Dirty Mind album back in 1980.

As if we could even agree on what punk is/was.

where does the need to label everything which is minusculy deviating from something else a new name come from ?
Dr. Dre is suppose to have a new all-black band to produce anytime soon.

the music speciality: Ghetto Metal.

Watch for it. :D

no, it means he is an overated short arse c**t with minimal talent.
Hey, watch it :!: Sign "O" The Times is my all time favorite Prince album. Here is my top five list so far:

1)Sign "O" The Times
2)Purple Rain
3)Parade
4)Diamonds And Pearls
5)1999

And don't you dare sleep until you hear Musicology first. :D

By the way, you sound too much like a Rick James fan. 8) Didn't you know that Prince can play over 20 different instruments :?: :?: :?:

That doesn't look like a man with minimal talent to me. :D

Post

Whether you like him or not, only a fool can dismiss Prince's talent level....

That's like saying Michaelangelo was a mediocre artist, just because you're not a fan of that style.

yep he is

and his biggest undervalued album is the rainbow children :) his latest album is an attempt to break free from the weird stuff and be a bit more regular
but i for one am a fan of ALL his weird stuff

i love thief's in the temple and i can't help but find his most popular song purple rain his loveliest song ..... theres just so much meant emotion in that song and the guitar solo is well erm .... infallible

i have a jody mitchell cover he does on piano
he`s dishonestly gifted .........

Post

I like that... "dishonestly gifted"... I'll have to steal that one sometime. ;)

I bought Musicology without having even heard a single song. Mind you, he's not the only artist I'll do that for. I'd say a good third of my collection is just blind faith and word of mouth. :D

I've seen templates for the cloud guitar around. I may build one some day.

your welcome - no one holds a patent on language ;)

but honestly i feel like life i so dishonest
one guy is born handsome and intelligent and born with social skills etcetera .. while another is pimple faced and fat and cross eyed or so
or like stupid people - i mean why can't we all be equally smart ... or music - the other day a girlfriend of mine came around to play tenor sax and piano .. she never had lessons and plays every instrument you put in her hand .. i mean why is that - others try and try and try - blood sweat - tears and will never reach her level :(

anyway - some have other shortcomings and prince is born a midget so that was probably the reason he overcompensated  and became a genius from just another gifted soul ........ blood sweat tears and talent :!:

but still ..... life is just so blatantly unfair
