There's apparently tons of money in the "how to.." business. Anybody else noticed the huge explosion of online classes and paid for tutorial content in the past 3 years? Basically in any profession.. music, photography, painting, design, etc.

"how to" business I think is just a part of general category that I like to call "bullshit industry". It's been with us forever. It's very persistent. Now I can't tell if the course in question is part of bullshit industry because I haven't seen its contents, but if we assume that it is, at least it's not the worst kind of product. Generally speaking "how-tos" aren't usually all that bad.bmanic wrote:There's apparently tons of money in the "how to.." business. Bullshit industry is basically about magical cures to problems that might exist or might not exist. Bad leadership qualities? Take a leadership camp. No really, you have to take it, because your employer will force you into one. There you can hear all about the sacred 12 steps of whatever, all kind of quantifiable shit. Feel like your management skills just aren't good enough? Hey, good news, there's a ton of apps just for you that "will solve all your managing problems". All that has to be done is that each member of your team will download the app and fill in reports through it to you. By some sheer magic, this innovative thing which certainly isn't like filling paper reports digitally, will solve your management problems. And certainly wont burden your team with just more useless reports. Hey, even Google uses these methods, so why shouldn't your small team use them?
That's bullshit industry for you. It gets really bad when it reaches to desperate people, however. Say, people with diseases that have no known cures. They are extremely desperate and vulnerable, so its probably no wonder that this is particular area where bullshit industry has been doing well for decades. But it has been expanding, clearly.
So in comparison with that kind of stuff, all these "how-to" things just don't seem to me that bad in the end. Especially because there's no strings attached and because they aren't that expensive. I think a lot of people learn quickly that they can't really do the magic people might expect out of them, so like binge-purchasing "how to" videos isn't probably going to ever be a thing. And thank god for that.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Very true, it's been there for at least 80 years if not more. Personally, I prefer to take the time to search the information all over the internet, after a while you get faster and can easily find the good information within a week or two.Functional wrote:"how to" business I think is just a part of general category that I like to call "bullshit industry". Yeah, I would say something like that in terms of how long has bullshit industry existed. Of course, as nothing seems to come out of nowhere, even bullshit industry has its own genesis. All sorts of magical cures in history, out of which I in particular like bloodletting as an example, because it is so telling of us humans. The difference is that now there seems to be a real industry where the point is to wrap up bullshit into any kind of possible product and sell it. Often this sort of industry operates alongside of legitimate efforts to make it appear more credible.SampleScience wrote: Very true, it's been there for at least 80 years if not more. And I agree, you can quickly search for information in the internet and usually that clears any doubts. But even still, I've actually had some (even mature adult) friends who were supposed to be smart, who got themselves drawn in some pyramid scheme with magical products usually related to medical sciences, esp. physiology. To me it was so hard to comprehend because even though the whole thing smells heavily from far away, any last doubts will be removed by a quick google search. Yet even these, supposedly smart people I've known, have fell for them, against all odds. And we're talking about stuff where the commitment is much bigger than just a masterclass for hundred quid.
I actually plan at some point to read more literature about this, maybe write some lyrics for a song about this. I find some of this stuff very sad. The way how some of this bullshit industry abuses straight up desperate people is just very hurtful. For some people it ruins their social relations. For some their finances. For some their health (either due to what is being prescribed to them or due to them avoiding conventional medicine and generally professional physicians help). For some, all of these at worst.

And mebbe important thing here to though is to also clear that I don't really think that the industry is filled with people who consciously scam other people. No, I think for example that most of consultants, be their actual use how questionable ever, probably legitimately think that their consulting does matter and make a change and so on. Some people surely are just in the industry for scamming others, but I think a lot of them are for quite opposite reasons.

I am making money mainly through writing about music, either reviewing or book chapters with assiacted talks. And composing / sound design for artists videos and installation. Never made anything much from selling songs/ pieces. Not at all.
Hope to move into a little bit theatre sound design after a long absence. Also video plus sound for taichi - but that is more to show appreciation to my wonderful teacher
