Ever tried to re-record your take being played through "desktop"-monitors - with a mic standing a couple of feet away? Doing this again from other positions and/or with other volumes to achieve a different room "noise level" - and then layering the multiple recordings?

To me, it "sounds" like the Spector approach - for homestudio enthusiasts. ;)

Well, me at least :)

Do you know what studio it was recorded in? Also the drum kit, or at least the kit type?
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

Here’s an interesting article about the making of that song:

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/201 ... ector-phil

The relevant quote from that article is this:
The Gold Star studio in Los Angeles was famous for its echo chamber: a room that looked like it had a giant coffin in its ceiling. Everything we recorded came out of a speaker at one end and into a microphone at the other.
There is what is claimed to be an impulse for this chamber here, and it sounds right to my ears: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=16854.0

I’ll email a copy of that impulse to Melda.

Ah_Dziz wrote:Just started fiddling with this thing this afternoon. I've built a whole bunch of algorithms from the ground up to figure out whats going on under the hood. This thing is damn impressive. I am terrible at assigning macros and whatnot because I usually do all my programming on a song by song basis. I'm curious though. would anybody be interested in a collection of FSU weirdo reverb Active presets? I've made some insane drum rooms and lush piano verbs as well as some cool spatial ER effects, but the things that this does when you abuse the algorithm programming are crazy and something I feel I could contribute to. With the more regular reverbs I feel like I could make a great collection of normal presets, but that's just because I'm tuning the algorithm to the source type I'm working with. So does anybody want batshit crazy reverb active presets that will make anything you feed them sound nuts? I'm thinking mostly stuff with just a few knobs that do weird rhythmic stuff and whatnot.
yes, absolutely - sounds very interresting to me!!

Not bad at all, although the sound is a bit too clean on the instrumental "be my baby" remake, but I guess some saturation and hifreq-cutting can help there.
Would be nice to hear Melda running vocals and Abbey Road 60´s drummer through a model of this reverb.

Ah_Dziz: Certainly! ;) Bring it on, but please design it nicely ;). Ideally if such an active presete would do lots of different weirdness :D

To everyone: In the documentation I forgot to include one new module, so here it is:
F / Filter (frequency;type;Q;gain)

Filter lets you create a classic filter used in most equalizers. You should specify all of the required parameters, otherwise these will default to frequency=8000Hz, Q=0.7071 (neutral Q), gain=-6dB and type=lowpass6. The filter type parameter is self-explanatory can have one of following values: Peak, PeakAnalog, LowShelf, HighShelf, LowPass, HighPass, LowPass6, HighPass6, BandPass, Notch.

Example: <example>f(1000)</example> = a 6dB/oct lowpass filter at 1000Hz. 6dB/oct filters don't have a resonance nor gain, so the 2 parameters, which haven't been specified are ignored.

Example: <example>f(2000;highshelf;2;-8)</example> = a highshelf filter at 2kHz with Q=2 and gain -8dB.

Well, I tried to get into MTurboReverb but outside of the typical parameters, I just can't get into the algorithm aspect of it. my brain just doesn't work that way. I can't stand coding or anything resembling coding. Otherwise it sounds nice but I have tons of reverbs and without getting into the algorithm stuff, I don't have much value to offer. I guess I will have to make use of presets. But great stuff for those of you who can dig into the algo building. can't wait to see what you come up with.

I was able to get a couple of good algorithms using the Randomize button (plus lots of unusable ones and some that caused huge spikes in the signal).

Post

Usually I like to take over each and every parameter so the randomize would be the last option for me. Having said that, I'm bit overwhelmed with massive count of options in this turbo thing.

Post

There's lots of stuff to play with indeed, that's why the randomization is really important ;). But there are also lots and lots of presets for both ER and LR sections, so it should be pretty easy to play with it.

Good point. And ir analyse comes handy too in some situations.

Thank you for the new Filter option. That is exactly what I wanted. I though you expected us to use the cross control as a filter, so there was a bit of confusion.

For those that haven't tried it yet, making different reverbs is fun, but it takes some time to learn what all those commands do and how they sound. I'm of course no expert, but perhaps later I'll write something about how to make things that don't sound like a metal silo.

Here’s a really nice sounding reverb, which can, depending on the size, be anything from a drum reverb to a huge ambient reverb. It only needs 10 characters:

p[#[v;9a]]

This puts, in parallel, a number of modulating delay lines followed by nine allpass filters. I get good results with a complexity of 18, but if you have the CPU to spare to handle a complexity of 64, that also works quite nicely.

I have the delay min be 0% and the delay max be 100% to allow the allpass filters to have a diverse set of values to minimize metallic resonances. A size of 50% or more and a length of 20 seconds or more makes a great ambient wash. It works also as a nice drum reverb: A size of 5% and a decay of 300ms makes for a nice drum thickener.
