Hey and congrats to all!

I'm certainly not a regular here. This was my second time participating. The first one being the #91. Needless to say, I couldn't be happier about my placing this time around. The competition has given me confidence that I should continue making music and maybe even publish something, other than OSC entries, in the future. I know that I have a lot to improve in my sound design and mixing/mastering skills. I think many of you scored my song high mostly because of the composition, and I thank you for that. To me, most of the top songs sounded superior to mine. I have a lot to learn.

About the process of making the song. November was a different kind of month for me. I started making sounds for the song quite early, but in the beginning half of the month, the hearing in my right ear got weird all of a sudden. A few days later I got dizziness attacks. I went to see a doctor and the conclusion was that everything points to first symptoms of Meniere's disease (disorder of the inner ear). I had a hearing test and bass frequencies were something like -20dB compared to my left ear. Obviously I was a bit shocked about the fact that I might be losing hearing in my right ear at the age of 33 and there is no cure other than living healthy. Anyway, I continued composing the song. I couldn't stop thinking about, what if my hearing won't return or how long will I be able to make music? I'm sure those emotions affected how the composition turned out. Luckily the hearing started to come back and after 2 weeks it was quite normal so I could finish the song with full hearing.

I will take an undetermined break from OSC for now, but I will be back at some point, for sure. Thank you all who commented my song in this thread and on Soundcloud!

Congrats people!

(and after seeing 3 long pages of various comments)

Congrats to everyone! Everyone created an entire track from one plugin, mixed it and put it out into the world. Most on KVR didn't do that.

:)
Congratulations to the Winners.
One thing is for sure the OSC Challenge is getting very competitive these days. :D

For those that didn't do as well as hoped, don't be discouraged just come back stronger!

Post

Just woke up. Nice to not be part of the drama anymore.

I'll make this short and sweet.

My apologies to the OSC forum for being a jackass. No excuses. I'm putting it behind me and I only ask that you can as well and accept me back into the community. This month taught me that indeed, if I bust my ass on a track, I will do better. Only 2 people gave me 1s this month. I consider that a major victory. So you were all right. If I make a better track, I will get better scores. It's not personal. And this month proves that more than anything because I know I pissed off just about everybody in this place including Z who flat out told me to leave and never come back, to which I had to do a lot of soul searching.

The end result?

I'm now formally studying all aspects of music production. It's going to be a long, hard road and will probably take me years in spite of how long I've already been doing this. But that's okay. This has finally become something important enough to me to truly want to get better at. And I will. Who knows? Maybe 10 years from now I'll finally make top 5 here.

Anyway, that's it. I'm sorry. You will have no more problems with me.

Congrats to the winners and sorry to see Z leave the competition. In spite of our differences, you were one of my heroes here. I so much wanted to someday be as good as you.

Maybe someday I will.

Wow, this is incredible! :ud:

11th place, my best placement so far. This is encouraging, especially in this hard competition!

There are so many awesome tracks this month and the voting was a challenge too.

As always: Congrats to the winners
Thanks for your friendly comments (and, of course, your points  ) and good luck for the next time!

Merry christmas to you

Congratulation to mmGhost

And also to all other top places of Chem57/Aarni, Z.Prime and ATN69 :tu:
Very very well deserved.

I know we allways say each month that "this" month was special and had so many good entries. I think OSC93 was realy exeptional. It is for sure a question of taste, but I was happy that we had so many non EDM-tracks and some of them made it to top rankings.

So I am very proud to make it to the 4th place. Thank you all so much for your points.

I read all those comments of the last day and I have not much to add to this disscusion. I can more ot less fully agree to Z.Primes comments. I do belive that most of the participants are voting according the music and not thinking about the person behind (just because we do not relay know each other). I see in the given points that some of us do have a bigger influence of taste, because the give allways more points to certain genres. No one of us is free of this, I only can try to be as obejctive as possible.

A second point where I want to give my comment is the "anonymous entry". It would work for participants who are new or did not take part so often. But for most of the regular perticipants we could guess quite well who is the artist behind the track. And I fear that this will lead to a wild guessing in the forum after each entry. Which will destroy the effect behind the idea.

Congrats to all!!

There was some stiff competition this month. Thats great!!! Its great to hear so many artists from all over the world.
I read more than post = I listen more than I talk

Congratulation to the winners and to every participant!

And some more words on behalf of the track that made me vote although not having entered a track:

Photonic - Memories of Tomorrow
:hail:

The music you created might well be THE single best track on the contest ever AFAIC. This orchestral cinematic music does not reflect my taste of music at all. But every aspect from sound design to composition to mix to dynamics to creating the space where it all happens is perfect to the max! A truely great achievement, Manfred.

This had to be said.

Always like to see how my 5s did when this is all over.

Here they are with their finishes.

Games We Play (OSC93 OBDX) = 2nd DQ'd for not voting
Orboscope - Sapphire Shade - 6th
New World (5 points just for the music) - 2nd officially. I knew this was an amazing track.
TheNeverScene - Surface Tension -12th

All in all, not bad.

Looking forward to the next one. And again, congrats to all the winners. This was on amazing collection of tunes.

Congratulations to the winners. A few specific comments:

- Wagtunes -- your note was very nice, and it's great that your results reflected that extra work and attention to detail really does help. Looking forward to hearing your future entries.

- Dr Bob -- I loved your piece and while I don't buy into that OSC is weighted towards EDM necessarily, I think that a lot of the voters automatically give more points to tracks that are a little busier, rhythmic, louder and (unfortunately) repetitive.

Z -- your sfx-only track worked on a micro and macro level. It was engaging and interesting for every second of the piece. That, combined with your always high quality production = win. Congratulations.

For those of you who didn't score well -- don't get frustrated or upset, look at your tracks objectively, listen to the winners, then forget the scores and keep being creative!

- Reading thru the pages of analysis of how people vote I have mixed feelings. I really don't think there is anything political here. I've been doing this for a few years and think I know the regular cast of characters, and over that time have seen very objective voting. I think that people respond to the quality of the sound design, composition and production. However, I also think that historically the voting skews towards the more percussive and dance type compositions (don't everyone freak out I know there are a ton of exceptions to this in the winners! - it's just a general comment).

- For me the enemy of placing well is boredom. If your song repeats the same thing over and over and over and over it will be boring and will probably place lower. I will certainly give it a lower score no matter how great the drums or bass are. If your song has only four chords and they play through the whole song even with variations in sound, I will think it is boring and it will not score as well. Also, if you're aiming for an orchestral sound and you don't quite get there, you will lose points.

- I'm a little disappointed in my rank this month, but that's how it goes. I almost always come somewhere in the middle and this month got an almost equal number of 5's and 2's -- not sure what that tells me but makes sense I would be in the middle.

-- BJ - could you add a total column next to the 5,4,3,2,1 rows? It would be interesting to see how they're distributed (I'm no statistician so am not sure what it will mean, but just seems interesting).

Anyway -- congrats again to the winners. I thought the tracks in generral were really, really good, and as always, am honored to be part of this very friendly community.

Really ?? I have learnt so much from the helpful commments and PM's etc from Z'. He (among others) has helped me move from being really rather mediocre to being just that little bit better at all this, whilst still allowing me to furnish you with my own "brand" of music. One day I may hit the OSC "sweet spot". If he bows out, this challenge will be the worse for it - and I for one will miss his epic tracks!
