Um, are there still any pop stars?

As I was listening to my 80's station playing all those songs by pop stars of that era, I was wondering if there are still pop stars today? Since my musical universe basically ends around 1990 and I live in the past, I am curious as to who the modern pop stars are, if there are any

Stardom is not what it used to be, there are no true super stars universally loved by everyone with careers in the limelight spanning for decades. Blame global cultural mass ADHD, dramatic change in the technical ways music is consumed, and shattering of the music scene into smaller and smaller subcultures.

Of course there are still pop stars. Surprised that someone can't be aware of that, the amount of times one gets confronted wiht it, whether one likes it or not.

Madonna hasn't really ended her career either, as far as i'm aware of. You might know her from the 80ies.

I don't know... After her last "performance" in the Hillary Clinton campaign, I feel that she's totally lost. I may be wrong though (I never valued her much, anyway, so, it's not like I will regret it).

Any guy in his 50s is, I think It's the natural order of things, I guess

I remember reading an interview with Klaus Schulze many years ago, where the interviewer asked him who were his musical idols. He answered: "When I was 18, I had idols. Now, I'm 34...". Now transport that to 50 something.

I didn't see that, nor know she is still active. She must be 60 or so...
But like you I never liked her, although she certainly was a big star back then. I liked some of her early tunes, but when she turned all vulgar, that was the end of it, as far as I am concerned.

I disagree. Nowadays, the stars are Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys, the rappers (I never know which one is on top each year, maybe the biggest of them all, at least judging for his own words, is that guy that married the Kardashian ) and, as a rising star, Ariana Grande.

So, where is the difference, apart from the different musical genres, and target audiences? Naturally, the things which are popular will shift with the time. In the 50ies, hysteric teenagers screamed when the King was playing. Nowadays, hysteric teenagers scream when Lady Gaga, or Justin Bieber are playing. I really don't see a difference. Of course, the stars will run around half naked on the stage nowadays (or act like pimps, when they're male). It will always get more and more extreme, i mean, the King used to shock parents in the 50ies, nowadays, it will probably make them yawn a bit.

The funny thing with the half dozen or so you have mentioned is that I know the names, but I don't know what they look like, they could stand in front of me and I would not recognize them.
The old stars' faces I knew because there were pop music shows on TV.

I just disagreed when you said that Madonna still is a pop star nowadays. But I agree - there isn't much a difference, except maybe in the quality of the end product each one of these "stars" produces, which is kind of subjective anyway, I guess.

All of them sound familiar, yet I can't recall a single song to associate with any of those acts. There are no pop stars anymore, we upgraded to celebrities.
