Question on gain staging:
If the volume of an oscillator is set to center position it easily reaches +6dB/overload/in the red when viewed in the mixer section, but the OSCS display on the right side of the mixer displays -12 dB, so there is a difference of roundabout -18 dB between the two. I understand that there is some sort of padding going on so that when multiple oscs are used in a patch, things don't go through the roof, but when a patch only uses 1 osc, is there a way to switch off that padding? Otherwise things have to be boosted in the FX section which seems strange.

I was playing around with some presets in Avenger yesterday, tweaked a few, added some notes to one of the arpeggiators, and bam! the beginning of a new track. I love this thing!

Hey, I know you know this synth way more than me, so forgive me if this is stating the obvious and I'm missing your point.Sampleconstruct wrote:Question on gain staging:

If you boost the gain for the individual oscillator (in the main oscillator window) all the way up (to +12dB), AND boost the OSCs mixer slider all the way up in the mixer window, I get full gain. Is that what you're shooting for? Or did I misunderstand?

stay low, (-12 and -18dB) , you shouldn't run into problems with summing on the mix bus. Not suse how accurate any metering is, but I keep it well away from the red and use a bit of compsession for volume.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Yes, I stay low in the individual osc section, that's why I was asking, always using a compressor/limiter to boost things at the end of the chain is not ideal though.SLiC wrote:stay low, (-12 and -18dB) , you shouldn't run into problems with summing on the mix bus. Yeah, but totally overloading everything to get full gain is just not happening.OzoneJunkie wrote:Hey, I know you know this synth way more than me, so forgive me if this is stating the obvious and I'm missing your point.Sampleconstruct wrote:Question on gain staging:

Yup- its the problem with digital mixing, just pushing things get you clipping rather than warm overdrive, and some devs keep the levels low to avoid this (so you do need to crank things up) and some don't...Sampleconstruct wrote:Yes, I stay low in the individual osc section, that's why I was asking, always using a compressor/limiter to boost things at the end of the chain is not ideal though.SLiC wrote:stay low, (-12 and -18dB) , you shouldn't run into problems with summing on the mix bus. On my modular I often have to keep the levels very low - 1 osc full, 2 osc 50/50, 3 30/309/30 etc as they are often hot. I get the impression with most software compensates (unless its a really accurate model like Legend where you can gain stage for clear or get that 'nice' modelled overdrive...). Given the amount of oscillators that could be employed, gain staging should be automatic to a degree...
Sure the dev will chip in

what bitdepth is going on internally? 32 bit fp? Also some built in saturation when going into red or act like clipping? To my ears it sound like it clips or hads distortion when driving into red but mainout is low. Not sure exacly but my guess its designed this or my ears are fooling me? Msvs? If the main out is lower then audio clipping level it shouldnt clip if its 32 bit fp no limiter compressor on.SLiC wrote:stay low, (-12 and -18dB) , you shouldn't run into problems with summing on the mix bus. I relocated my factory content files, but at startup Avenger keeps asking to install the content file again. Can I bypass it and just direct to the new directory?

Hey I got a question about the Keytrack feature.
In the manual it says:
"Keytrack: the keytrack sets if and by how much the filter reacts to the pitch of an incoming note. If the keytrack is set to 0% then the filter doesn’t react to the pitch at all and sounds the same no matter which key is pressed. Set it to 100% and the cutoff of the filter will open more and more as the pitch of the notes being played increases. At 100%, the keytracking relates 1:1 to the note pitches, that means you can create a tonally playable “whistling” tone by now setting the filter’s resonance very high. "
However, when I try to modulate phaser frequency with keytrack I can never get a 1:1 relationship to note pitches. In Spire, Sylenth1, Serum etc you can do this. Modulate phaser frequency with a keytrack and have tonally playable tones with the phasers frequency & feedback. Also when I put keytrack to 100% for the comb filter I do not get a 1:1 relationship, and cant created tonally playable notes.
Questions: Is there a way to get the keytrack to work 1:1 with the phaser? If not perhaps putting a simple phaser in the filter section that allows for 100% keytrack would be a option? Similarly is there a way to get the 1:1 relationship with the comb filter?
Thanks

no, the Phaser/flanger whatever have totally different ranges. The text relates to the Filter module itself. Use a Notch filter instead the phaser. There is another reason you should not use the phaser fx:
A FX like the phaser etc, would NOT be polyphonic. The filter is polyphonic, means you can press chords, and every note of it has its own filter with the resonance frequency you want. Any FX however are monophon, this means the last pressed key will overwrite the setting.)
