Yes

Should we open a Ohm Studio account while we're at it, and do a collab?-)

Post

I think I'll just cross my fingers and wait for bitwig 2 :P They better bring the collab feature then :box:

Guess it doesn't have a word in english but an explanation. Direct translation for that "kikkelitranse" is penistrance. Though it has nothing to do with genitals :hihi:

Maybe short answer would be "melodic trance" and that melody part that plays in certain style.. Fast arpeggiated melodies maybe? There's also term knows as "kikkelihevi" which does exactly the same thing but with guitars :D

Oh boy those kiksu parties at late 90's and at the beginning of the millenium <3
Once we dragged hell of a PA systems, lights, smokemachines and batteries in to a forest and people were invited with word from mouth to mouth. One of the best parties ever.

Post

So I'm writing "penis trance"? Good to know :D

Don't mid the collab but not in 2016 ;) Maybe I'll join in in the first week of January. Thing is that I'm an oldschool weirdo and my main DAW machine is not online, I'd prefer exchanging MIDIs and wavs.

But it was really nice! What synth did you use?

If you are interested, I could try to make a track from it.

Nice take on modern proggy sound, very good mixing :tu:

How do you like Avenger compared to other synths, Spire, Serum etc? I know it has crapload of features but what about the sound?

Btw. the link to your fisrt vid is broken

Nah, it was just one of my canned entries for the current Synth1 OSC. I was experimenting with three layered instances running their arps from the same chord progression, but that bassline didn't really work. It was never supposed to be trance, Synth1 just always wants to do trance, hence the tempo is 102BPM.

I progressed a bit with my first psy track, but damn is it hard to avoid cliches. Now I also realize why they are cliches, some rhythms and melodies seem to come easier/more naturally. I also noticed how production-intensive psy is, the line between mediocre sound and amazing is thin but difficult to cross.

Post

But hey.. Doesn't "cliche" only mean that it'll work? ;)

Thanks for taking the time to listen, on that particular track, apart from sound design, I did mixing and mastering myself (I rarely do both) so your comment is very much appreciated :)

About Avenger I can only compare it to Massive and Serum (never used Spire) since they're all wavetable synths: I have to say that I fell in love with it immediately, it's definitely become my go-to synth.

The sound is right there at the top with the other 2 synth mentioned above, the only thing that Serum has more than Avenger is that it allows bigger wavetables basically - something that for me doesn't make any real difference. In return Avenger has one of the most incredible wavetable env/sequencer I've ever seen, it's just mind boggling - and sort of well hidden.

Probably the biggest complain I have as of now is that even if it has dozens of filters types their quality is not always consistent: I could definitely hear some steppy ones - I'm veery picky about filters and I run some specific tests to spot this one, I'm not talking about a blatant issue here.

If we talk about modulation options and sheer quantity of features Avenger blows the other two synths away. It's an absolute joy to program and I feel that everything on the interface makes so much sense, it just fits perfectly the way I think sound design and so far I've never felt constrained when making a sound, I always found a pretty quick and logical way to achieve what I had in mind, which for me is huge.
My personal opinion is that this synth is particularly fit to do Psytrance, as it's a very technical and demanding genre in terms of sound design.

I plan to put some more Psytrance production videos soon on the channel, as in the last couple of weeks I got much more comfortable using that synth.

Cheers

Apparently I'm now paying the price for all the sins I committed in the late 90's, and the shadow of kikkeli stands over my shoulder no matter what I do. Maybe I just need to get it out of my system before I'm allowed to move on. Anyways, here's part of the wip "psy" track that was inspired by this thread. Basically no drum programming yet, unmixed (I use headphones until the mix), and even the structure is just roughly sketched from session view- but I guess it's time for a reality check to hear if it's worth working on.

Next stage would be kinda labour-intensive with the breaks, risers and such, cba if the idea doesn't hit any nerves.

Thanks for the feedback about Avenger, I have the demo but frankly I was not very impressed by sound at the first contact and forgot about it. But I only browsed the presets and made some basic VA and FM patches. I'm thinking about picking up Serum for some advanced wavetable stuff, would you recommend giving Avenger second run isntead?

Would you post your Avenger psy vids here as you make them?

When I first got avenger I did some tests with all three going through an oscilloscope and spectrum analyser, checking out wave samples and filters: all three can sound extremely close to each other, down to be almost identical at the best oversampling quality - so you can't really go wrong with any of those.
To me really it's down to workflow and number of features, take whatever you feel really comfortable with and actually clicks for you I'd say

One thing about Avenger is that the sound library can be sort of misleading as it's very much EDM oriented, which at least to me makes it 80% useless, even though the patches themselves are very high quality and use some very clever and interesting design solutions worth reverse engineering.

I will definitely post some more videos, for sure after I'm back from holidays, maybe even a bit before than that. I'm thinking about making shorter videos tackling various production techniques one at a time, even though it may vary as I'm not much of a video editor.

Cheers
