Hello!

So, I've been demoing Reason 9 now couple weeks. I like it very much. Somehow I feel very creative in Reason. Don't know if this is just a "new toy excitement", or just that it fits to me and my workflow very well.

What I dont like it, is that there is no good EQ. Something similar to FF Pro-Q2. Lack of other effects and good synths as well is not nice. Upgrade prices seems to be high, RE's prices are also quite high.

How the developers take feature requests? Any experience on that? I read that there is no PDC at all. That would be very bad. Has anyone noticed this PDC issues?

Share with me your experiences with Reason. Especially all the negative experiences, thanks! :)

Sorry for my bad english!

There is no PDC in Reason 9 and yes there are issues with it (try Softube FET on parallel compression with look ahead).
Prices are high and i agree EQ selection is bad.

But...on it's own it is most stable DAW i worked with, PDC issues can be remedied with toying, Synapse does have good EQ it's just that it is not as optimized as today VST eq's - read you can not run a lot of it like you can on VST but this is RE limitation not Synapse.

Overall i think if it is working for you you should consider to invest in it. Certainly over time things will be even better in Reason. Just a guess and my advice.

Reason was popular back in the day, because you could run many instances of their synths even on laptops.
Now we have way more CPU power.
The midi editor is primitive.
I can see Reason being good only if you need many layered pads playing at the same time.

That is really the only time you can see Reason being good?

Reason is awesome and still good for many things besides layered pads. Several good EQs exist as REs, though I agree the FF functionality is exceptional and just not available for Reason. I kind of get the best of both worlds by ReWiring it to Cubase and using processors after the fact.

I'm a demoer too. The thing that draws me to reason is it feels unique and focused. All the other DAWs I've tried look and feel very similar to each other with their own quirks, Ableton/Bitwig being the outlier. I like how easy it is to quickly come up with new melodies with the clips in Ablewig, but it's very easy to be distracted and to build mass tons of clips with no direction for me.

I've thought about the lack of true VST support, but there are some very high quality REs to make up for that. And in the grand scheme of things once I fully grasp sound design, beyond my current rudimentary level, VST support won't matter that much.

On the flip side I much prefer editing midi in Ableton, something about it just works much better imo. With that in mind I tend to replay my sections when I flub up unless it's just a note or 2 that either fat fingered or missed because I'm awesome.

I also really like the drum rack in Ableton. It's easy to quickly double the length of a programmed drum vs rebuilding 1-16 over to 17-32 section on Redrum. Also I like just playing out my filler bits on my MPD straight into a clip, going to try messing with Kong more before the demos run out, but from what I've seen I still prefer the drum rack. I hit a pad, I control "the best of" for that pad straight from my controller, Kong just gives me basic controls over the whole machine.

Instrument Rack vs Combinator both achieve similar goals, but combinator is definitely more flexible.

Opening old projects, reason takes the cake. I opened some demo stuff i made from reason 7 and 8 I had saved and they opened without any fuss. My old Ableton projects freak out because I accidentally changed my VSTs folder setup a little after a harddrive failure, or the couple that I made on my old Mac with AUs (i have the VST version too). I literally have to change those to something different and try to recreate something similar.

Anyways, those are my 2c.

If you need a good simple synth take a look at Antidote. It is an awesome synth. Also the two Monopoly and Poly6 from Korg.

Reason has some excellent saturation and coloring plugins. Scream4, Pulverizer (has excellent filters), and Audiomatic.

An old Reason synth I always come back is Malstrom. Still highly useful. Automating the shift leads to excellent and unique results. Similar to sync sounds but better. For the shift knob every 21 values it changes the perceived octave.

Reason 9 is awesome. I use a lot of DAW's regularly but for me, Reason beats them all when it comes to actually making music. Its ridiculously stable, easy on the eyes, and there are now loads of excellent Rack Extensions to choose from. Version 9 cleaned up the workflow and added some killer new features. The new pitch editor is slowly becoming the most usable pitch corrector out there for me. "Players" are killer new devices for simply inspiring you to write something or giving you a musical bed to build around. "Bounce in place" is a long overdue but useful new feature that makes cpu usage a non issue for most of us. An overlooked but critical new feature is that you can actually bounce audio to midi simply by dragging the audio on to another midi track. I had no idea how much I would actually use this feature until now and I keep finding myself wishing some of my other software would implement it as well.

I am a techie by trade and I work in IT and web development so I know more than anyone how annoying computers can be when things don't work like they are supposed to. In that regard, Reason is a godsend. Someone at Propellerhead should win an award for software coding as its the most stable software I've ever used within the Windows environment. And I don't mean just as far as music software. The fact is most DAW's today are excellent so you'll end up happy wherever you go, but Reason is like nothing else. If you click with its workflow, you likely wont have more fun making music on a computer.

It's not just "gas" ... was my experience when I went to 8 two years ago too.

But 9 was a drag of an update coming from 8.3, so it's a skip.

Spire may come to Reason pretty soon: https://www.instagram.com/p/BMjDQ3lgS0m/ Major gain for the RE environment. :) Also shows that all the talk about RE's not being a beneficial investment for devs is simply bull'. I do think though that Reason needs a nice synth. The stock devices never really convinced me, neither did the RE's so far.

I just stated over ReasonTalk how people made awesome music with Reason already back in the early days. Reason 9 + Rack Extensions are more than enough to get awesome music done with. And I agree that Reason is a magical tool for both, amateurs and Professionals. Just buy it - and start making music with it. If you keep in mind that Reason doesn't need "Kit extras" (The Micahael Night's Car) then you have a right attitude. Sure, you should buy the Re's that you like but still, I made good music with only Reason's native instruments/effects already in Reason 2. One more time: All the extras, buy them but never think they work without a clear focused attitude.

Have you tried the SSL Mixer EQ with the Spectrum EQ window (F2)? It's no Pro-Q2 obviously but a little easier to work with. :)

it's no offense, trolling or whatever, just wondering is there any Absolute + Additive * Multiplicative Automation in the v9 Reason like in Bitwig ( http://bitwigtutorials.net/tutorials/au ... ation.html )

so can u modulate an absolute one and set the modulation scale with another curve in the same time ?

@eq: I don't care for the built in one much myself after using it for a while. The synapse one isn't that great either. Some of the character eq's are ok (like msdsp) but it's not what the op is talking about.
