best motherboard you can afford, fast frontbus, good l2 cache.. and if you can afford it, 2 fast, tested dual channel ddr sticks

What does a Frontbus do?

I am wondering what advantage for a DAW a faster frontbus will achieve.

past stuff from CPU to RAM to etc.. the more bandwidth the more can pass and the smaller the bottle neck = faster

your computer's speed is determand by it, you can stick in the fastest ram and fastest cpu you can find in your motherboard but if the frontbus is chicken shit it's not going to go anywhere fast

Yesterday I've discovered most of my problems are pagefault related, but since I've done almost every diagnosis available (from memtest to open heart surgery) I now realise my machine needed a decent registry hack. That's really unfortunate. You're using good parts and that platform has certainly been around long enough to be well established.

Too late! I just bought an Athlon 64 3500+ and MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. I've been eyeing the 64s for a while and when the price dropped recently I went for it. We'll see how it works out.

i got my system at Monarchcomputer.com. Dont waste your money at carillion, you can get the same or better components + OS at the vendor i mentioned.

Sounds about right, though I'd add that you're only as fast as your weakest link, and it's not always the fsb, or Pentiums with an 800 MHz fsb would be killing the competition hands down instead of just being in the usual neck-in-neck speed competitions.

spaceman, that's too bad about your amd rig. you got good parts in it. judging from all the testing you've done i'm inclined to think that its an OS/software problem.

three more things you should consider;

1)you have good brand ram but maybe you should opt to try the fastest timed ram sticks that you can get your hands on, perhaps you cold try some corsair xms pro 3200c 2-2-2-2 (amd rig do better with faster timings while p4's do better with faster MHz)

2) you've may have tried this all ready but did you try a different vid card?

3) the NF7 S rev 2 uses a thermo diode to read the cpu temp which sometimes isn't calibrated right sometimes therefore your reported temps may actually be much higher in reallity.

oh yeah, what about the bios?

I had issues similar to Spaceman, upgraded to the latest drivers for my ATI gpu and, low and behold, problems solved.

I recently helped a friend with DAW issues. We replaced the ram, and all problems disappeared.

Just as an aside, the best investment I have made for my systems stability was Drive Image. I got my system to a the point of stable with all plugins working etc. and made an image. Now if it gets flaky, 4 minutes later it's back to normal. Makes it heaps easier to diagnose problems.

You'll love it! I just got that same mobo along with a A64 3000+ (overclocking to around 3400+ though) and its awesome. No complaints at all. Boots winxp almost instantly and for the music I make its almost overkill.

That said, I think AMDs promotion of the A64 as 64-bit is really doing more harm than good - as demonstrated by what spaceman said(64-bit still too early).

Yes, its true there is no 64-bit OS out. But who cares? The bottom line is that the A64 is an extremely fast cpu at 32-bit stuff and its much more economical than high-speed Pentium 4 chips. AMD should be marketing it as just a faster CPU - all this 64-bit business is just confusing potential customers.

Is it worth getting a Carillon DAW?
