I really love ethnic/world samples. Demos sound a little thin to me but was wondering if there were other opinions out there...

I own a copy and I will say it is exactly what I needed for a project I am working on. It has quite a varied library from around the world (see specs) and works very well in Falcon. The sampling is great and the scripting is good as well (dynamics to mod wheel as an example). Some of the drums are laid out in a two handed fashion which worked well with my pads.
I found the vocal traveler section to be quite intresting and suprising as it includes vocal phrases as well as atmospheric drones.
Some of my favorite sounds are the Bulgarian Tupan, Tupan of Bronx, Nordic Psalmondikon, Asian Taiko and the Celtic guitars... I could go on and on but you get the picture.
I hope that helps and Happy holidays!

I've got it but barely scratched the surface. The Velocity switched instruments are very playable. I've found the accordions much easier to get reasonable results with than with other libraries. The Kora sounds fantastic. And the Moldovian Cimbalom is also very well put together.
I'm not so sure about the Ouds so far – but Ouds are difficult to capture with sampling and I don't think I've got the keyswitch technique down. I found the Mahgreb Violin easier to get on with in that respect but it sounds a bit dead without some extra MIDI work (which is inevitable for instruments like this). I haven't worked out how best to attack the Psalmondikon yet.
I believe some of the content comes from the older Motu Ethno Instrument package (in case you've already got it) and also I think from UVI's much smaller World Traditions. A number of the instruments, like the Cimbalom, are new. In terms of WAV size, it's supposed to be about twice as big as Ethno (40GB vs 21GB), but it's about 30GB on disk. I got World Suite as an upgrade from World Traditions.

Care to tell what the upgrade price was? And did Traditions already run in Falcon?
Was thinking about to buy Traditions but it disappeared with the new World Suite.

The site shows the discounted price on the World Suite page if you're logged in – it doesn't need a coupon code. I think the discount runs until early January.Musical Gym wrote:I own World Traditions and never received notification there was an upgrade.

Thanks for letting me know; I won't be upgrading until/unless they have a major discount sale.
I sent them a note asking why no notification sent.

I didn't see the offer in the newsletter, but that's ok; I will pass on it for now.

It was a tough decision, but I passed up on EWQL's 50% off special (was going to get RA until I discovered UVI's World Suite).
I'm still on the fence though and was wondering if anyone would share their thoughts on the Uilleann Pipes, Duduk, and Sitar patches...How do they hold up to Ilya Efimov's and Impact Soundwork's libraries?
I've scoured the web for any sound demos of these patches and can't find anything specifically on these. I would be so grateful for any advice or if you're feeling generous, to post some little sound demos of these patches.
Much appreciated and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I don't have enough practice with World Suite to give a good answer on some of these and I don't have the Ilya Efimov stuff, though the winds in that collection sound pretty good from what I've head. The Uilleann Pipes in World Suite, however, feel like a bit of an afterthought. For some bizarre reason, the bagpipes are collected together in one instrument and selected by keyswitch. No, I can't think of a reason why you would want to suddenly switch from Northumbrian bagpipes to Uilleanns either.woafmann wrote:It was a tough decision, but I passed up on EWQL's 50% off special (was going to get RA until I discovered UVI's World Suite).

Within the instrument, you do have keyswitches for the main articulations for Great Highland bagpipes but only one articulation for Uilleann - a hard attack. To get anywhere near a realistic approach you are going to have to use a breath controller and plenty of fancy pitchbend programming. The Uilleann pipes in Ra are actually more flexible than those in World Suite.
The duduk is a lot better. I doubt it has the depth of the Efimov but it's serviceable with trill, staccato, vibrato and sustain articulations with mod wheel controlling tone. My temptation would be to map portamento glide to a MIDI CC and tweak that while playing to get slower trills. I'm no expert on duduk playing but it felt as though it was in the right ballpark.
On sitar, World Suite has a good selection of articulations and glissando effects available by keyswitch but isn't exactly something that you can pick up and play immediately not least because you have one set of keyswitches for all the strings so I guess you will need two instances to play stuff in real time convincingly. I'd say it's a better set of samples than the Ra keyswitched version. Ra has the benefit of having velocity switched live-mode versions which are easier to develop phrases on.
