This is a sweet oldie from my country. Maybe a little too sweet, getting close to the nauseating, but yet it is popular and have had a few cover versions too.

Hmm... I think I see where Wham got the inspiration... :hihi:

What are the Christmas traditions there? What do you do, and what do you eat on Christmas Night? And what are your traditional Christmas songs (not pop - traditional)?

I am a Christian too, that's why I also said that "Last Christmas" was a joke about Christmas. Seems like you misunderstood me. :dog:
Nothing wrong with "Last Christmas"
Except that if you replace Christmas with Halloween, or Independence Day, or anything else, it fits as well. It has nothing to do with Christmas, except for the fact that they mention that day as a time reference: "Last Christmas / I gave you my heart / The very next day / you gave it away / This year / to save me from tears / I'll give it to someone special". What does Christmas have to do with this?
Exactly. . The songs Got nothing to do with The real meaning of Christmas.. whether it be religious or humanitarian

Its a sad song.... by lyrical content in context of the Lyrics.. its release is more about passive aggressive response than giving in the true sense.. it was a commercial move to originally release it at Christmas time because many people would associate the bitter sweet sentiment with the giving of gifts at Christmas time... the real tradgedy of the song is that people can be hurtfull and fickle... :D

Real Christmas has nothing to do with snow, cold weather, Nordic culture, etc., most of what we in the West associate with Christmas is the heathen Santa Claus component. I think my friend in Rio, who went to the beach today, is closer to real Christmas than Scandinavians are.
Jesus was not even born in December, but probably in September or October according to bible scientists :hihi:

There are many fine songs dedicated to this season, to pick a favourite at random could be Yazoo's Winter Kills

It's a story about a guy giving his heart away, as a christmas gift. The guy even, "wrapped it up and sent it". Do people give gifts on Halloween or Independence day?
No law saying that xmas songs need to name-check certain things to gain authenticity - Manger...Check...Wise men...Check...Virgin Birth...Check

It's kinda irrelevant whether any of us thinks it meets the requirements of a christmas song. The fact that it has been culturally tied to this holiday for 33 years gives it a de facto christmas gem :tu:

Another favourite is Silent Winter by Cairo, the prog masters of San Francisco

Yes, you are right. Christmas was "moved" to December to replace the Winter solstice celebration (the same way that we have countless Saint celebrations in June to replace the Summer solstice celebration). But it's the spirit of the celebration that matters, not the historical accuracy. Santa is a "anglo-saxonic" invention. In the catholic countries it was always Baby Jesus, not Santa, and the Christmas Tree is also a modern import, that sadly replaced the Nativity representations of my childhood.

It's relevant for those to whom Christmas has a meaning. Besides, he could have given his heart for her birthday, for her graduation, whatever. It was a business decision, and shameless exploration of the season. As a Christmas song its meaningless, IMO. But if you think that is the song that fills your Christmas spirit, by all means...

Christmas has been transformed into a "commerce and shopping" season, and the real meaning of the celebration is being lost. That's what I have been trying to point.

Some of the members of Cairo also plays in Christmas (the band), on Rudolf Music
